Bike Lock Methodology

Bike Lock Methodology

When choosing a bike lock, there are many factors to consider, such as:

  • Shape: Whether it’s a U lock, a cable, or a chain, different shapes are better for different areas. For a high crime area, go with a U lock or a chain lock, while cable locks are better for low crime areas.
  • Access:  While some locks open with a key, some require a four or five digit code, which may or may not be customizable. This is more of a personal preference, but make sure if it’s a key program, the company has a system to replace your keys if necessary.
  • Weight: You’re most likely going to be carrying the lock around with you until you use it on your bike, so make sure it’s not going to weigh you down too much, especially if you’re in a low crime area.
  • Price: In terms of cost, bike locks have a huge range, from under $5 to over $100. I would spend $80 or more if you’re in a high crime area, whereas if you’re in a low crime area, you can get by without spending more than $20.

Bike Lock Tips

Buying one bike lock and calling it a day isn’t always the answer. Here are a few best practices for using bike locks and keeping your bike safe and sound:

  • Use more than one lock on your bike, for example a U lock and a chain lock, for maximum security. Make sure to loop your locks through your wheels as well!
  • Personalize your bike to make it easier to find if it’s been stolen, whether it’s paint, decals, or even a basket.
  • Put your bike inside at night, as this is when most thieves strike.
