Voice control is revolutionizing the smart home. Rather than pulling out your phone and finding the right app, it’s much easier to tell your digital assistant to turn off the lights, turn up the heat or turn on the TV.
Now, ADT has created an integration with Alexa to make it easier to disarm your security system with your voice. So if you’re hands are full with groceries or muddy from yard work, you can just ask Alexa to disarm the security system. Of course, you still have to provide a PIN, but now you can do it with your voice.
“A smart home is not always a safe home. Integrating ADT Pulse with Amazon Alexa voice service provides a more efficient, and equally as important, a safe approach, to hands-free home automation,” said Jamie Haenggi, ADT’s chief marketing officer. “We look forward to enhancing our product interactions, backed by our 20,000 employees dedicated to keeping our customers safe.”
If you have other smart-home devices hooked up to your ADT system, you can also control them with Alexa. Amazon Echo or Echo Dot owners can enable the skill through the Alexa app, setting up a unique verbal PIN from there.
While this may seem like a win, it can pose a security threat as well. While verbal element is great in some scenarios, you may want to avoid doing it with company over, because if Alexa can hear you, so can your guests. And they could use that info down the road to get in.
Luckily, you’ll still be able to use your standard entry pads to disarm the system around guests. But having the voice option available could make the difference in reducing the chance of a false alarm.
