Logitech is improving its Wi-Fi security camera, making it even more versatile than the original Logi Circle and adding a rugged exterior to let it survive outdoors.
The Logi Circle 2 is like four different cameras in one, all based around a 180-degree lens system. It can be used with a window mount, rechargeable battery, plug mount or weatherproof power extension.
The new camera is available for pre-order, starting at $180. You can purchase the battery-powered option for $200, and addition batteries are $50. The other accessories are offered as add-on purchases, so you don’t have to pay for mounts you won’t use.
The entire kit is weatherproof, so it can be used anywhere you have Wi-Fi. The battery, in a marked improvement over the original, can last for up to three months before needing a recharge. The original struggled to last a full day.
Other than the new form factor and modularity, the Logi Circle 2 offers similar specs to the original. Auto-night vision covers up to 15 feet, multiple cameras are supported, and the Circle Safe subscription offers advanced detection and additional recording times (with 24 hours stored in the cloud for free).
One other improvement is the ability to control your camera via Alexa and Apple’s HomeKit — a welcome addition, but it only works on wired power and only allows you to turn the camera on or off.
Logitech sets the Circle line apart by allowing users to be flexible with their camera placement. They can stick it on a front window to watch for a package delivery one day, then mount it in the living room to watch the babysitter over the weekend.
Security cameras aren’t great deterrents for home security, but offer great value in capturing evidence. The ability to move the camera around when needed, for short bursts or extended periods, makes the new Logi Circle 2 an attractive option for everyday consumers.
The Wi-Fi camera market is picking up steam. Just last month, Nest announced an updated camera with 4K resolution, adding smarts that make the camera more useful.
