Do you have to take off work to be home when the package gets there? Is the growing trend of package thieves snatching boxes off stoops going to hit you next? Do you just get your new microwave delivered to your office and then apologize a thousand times on your bus ride home?
Online retailer Jet.com is working with smart access provider Latch to install smart locks on 1,000 buildings in urban areas, easing deliveries for more than 100,000 residents. The smart locks will allow delivery people to get in the front door of a building, letting them drop off packages in safety while you’re toiling away at work.
But it isn’t just delivery drivers that benefit — tenants can use their phones to active the smart locks and even grant access to guests. The system can also be integrated into USPS access systems to ensure day-to-day deliveries still come through.
Jet.com shoppers will see special product notes that can be delivered now even if they’re not home on the site. However, other than the address confirmation, Jet.com won’t get any other information — like when you get home or leave — so your privacy is still well protected.
The program is rolling out in NYC buildings now, but Jet.com may expand the offering to other urban centers in the future. And maybe other online retailers will join in on the idea while giving shoppers some smart home benefits.
