SimpliSafe Introduces Standalone Security Camera

Wi-Fi security cameras are gaining ground in the home security industry, and now SimpliSafe is getting in on the game. The DIY home security company announced the SimpliCam this week, a $99 camera that offers 24/7 HD streaming of whatever you point it at.

While the camera works great as a standalone device, it really shines as part of a larger SimpliSafe security system. Users can enable visual verification, so when an alarm goes off, monitoring professionals can get the details and relay them to the proper authorities.

However, privacy is also built into the SimpliCam — physically built in. The camera has a stainless steel privacy shutter that closes whenever users arrive home, offering a clear visual that recording cannot physically take place. Users can also manually open and close the shutter from the mobile app, so they can keep an eye on a room across the house if they want.

Just like competing cameras from Nest, Logitech and others, the SimpliCam offers recording packages to capture all the details around an event and also includes smart motion detection to send you alerts with heat detection software.

However, the low price could set SimpliSafe apart from those competitors. At just $99, it’s on the cheaper side of these caliber connected cams. And for SimpliSafe, that’s an opportunity to get a foothold in the home that they can expand upon with more security hardware down the road.
