Tile Slim Review

Bluetooth trackers help you find lost items. Just attach them to your wallet, keys, or anything important, and you’ll be able to track objects through a mobile app. Pretty cool, right?

Tile is the leading manufacturer of Bluetooth trackers in the United States, with 80% of the market share. Everyday, Tiles keep track of three million items, and there’s been over 20 million Tiles sold worldwide. That sounds like something I definitely need to check out!

I purchased the Tile Slim, which comes in an even smaller package than the other Tile options. In this review, I’ll go over the Tile Slim’s design, features, and finally the Tile app. Let’s go!

At only 2.4 mm thick, the Tile Slim is the perfect addition to any wallet.

Design of the Tile Slim

Tile Slim

The Tile Slim got its name due to its depth of only 2.4 mm. That means that it’ll fit in your wallet just like any credit card would. At only 54 mm by 54 mm, you can rest assured that the Tile Slim doesn’t take up much space, although it’s surprisingly weighty at 9.3 grams. The Tile Slim will connect to your mobile app using Bluetooth LE. Unfortunately, the Tile Slim doesn’t have a key ring, so it will only work for a wallet or something else with a compartment.

Tile Slim in Wallet

The Tile Slim works in temperatures from 14 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit, so it won’t freeze or melt easily. Its IP rating of 57 ensures that it’s protected from dust and can even stand immersion of up to one meter of water. Whether it’s the death of a hot summer, the frost of a cold January, or pouring rain, the Tile Slim will keep on keeping on.

Although the Tile Slim is small, it has a built-in 82 decibel siren, about as loud as an alarm clock or garbage disposal. Depending on the size of your home, this may or may not be loud enough, but remember that as long as you’re within 100 feet of your Tile Slim, you can find its location through your app.

The only negative to the Tile Slim’s design that I can see is its non-replaceable custom battery. Although the battery lasts a year, after it’s out, you’ll have to buy a completely new Tile. If you join reTile, however, Tile will give you a discount on the replacements. I wish the battery was replaceable like that of the Tile Mate, but overall I’m happy with the Slim’s design.

Features of the Tile Slim

Tile Slim and Box

Now that I’ve talked about the Tile Slim’s design, we can move on to its features. Obviously, the Tile’s main function is to help you find lost items, but it’s a bit more complicated than that. Let me explain.

Community Find

Tile’s Community Find Feature

I know what you’re thinking. An 100 foot range isn’t that large, in the grand scheme of things. What if you lose your Tile Slim and you’re more than 100 feet away from it? Does this void its connection to your app, rendering your Tile utterly useless?

The answer is no, and that’s because of Tile’s Community Find feature. Anyone with a Tile app will be able to detect your Tile if they’re in 100 feet of it. Although they won’t be aware, you can be notified of your Tile’s location using their phone’s GPS. Don’t worry— Community Find is completely automatic and anonymous. The person will have no idea that they’re even helping you! All you have to do to access this feature is turn on “notify when found” in your Tile app. Sometimes teamwork truly does make the dream work.

Tile Premium

Just like security systems may have optional monthly subscriptions, so does your Tile. Tile Premium gives you some more helpful actions, including:

  • Smart alerts: you’ll be notified if you leave your house with your Tile Slim.
  • Location history: you’ll be able to see where your Slim has been in the past month.
  • Unlimited sharing: you’ll be able to share access to your Tile Slim with an unlimited number of family and friends.
  • Premium customer support: if you need help, you’ll have access to an exclusive text help line.

Tile Premium also comes with free battery replacements, which don’t apply to the Tile Slim as its battery is non-replaceable, and an extended warranty of three years, which doesn’t apply because the Tile Slim has a maximum life of only one year. Given that not all of Tile Premium’s features apply to the Tile Slim, I don’t think this feature is necessary, unless you’re especially forgetful. In any case, Tile Premium will cost you $2.99 a month or $29.99 a year.

Smart Platform Integrations

Tile Slim Smart Platform Integration

Finally, the Tile Slim integrates with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, meaning you’ll be able to ask your smart home where your objects are. Truly, the Tile makes it easier to find lost items than ever before.

Installing the Tile Slim

Gabe and Tile Slim

Setting up the Tile Slim only took me a couple minutes. After downloading the Tile app and making my account, I tapped the plus-sign in the app’s upper left hand corner. From there, I pressed the Tile logo on the center of the tracker itself, and heard a ring. Then, the app walked me through the rest of the syncing process, making sure the Slim could ring my phone and vice versa. Easy as pie!

The Tile App

The Tile App

Think of the Tile app has a carrier pigeon, except instead of hand-written letters, it sends data about your Tile’s location. This is 2019, isn’t it?

Aside from helping you find your lost objects, you can see where you had your items last, ask others for help in your community, and help find other people’s stuff just by having the Tile app on your phone!

I’m pleased to see that users generally like the Tile app, with ratings of 4.5 and 4.2 on the Apple and Google Play stores, respectively.

“It’s only been a week since I set [my Tile] up and I’ve had to use it 3 times. Each time it worked perfectly! It led me right to my lost item. It was also easy to set up. I just followed the directions. No trouble at all,”

wrote Tina DeYoung in a five-star review.

Recap of the Tile Slim

So, is the Tile Slim right for you? Let’s recap.

The Tile Slim might be right for you if you’d like:

  • Super small package: the Slim will fit great in any wallet.
  • Community Find: as Tile is the most popular tracker company, their community feature is super-helpful.
  • Integrations with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant: ask your smart home to help find your Tile Slim.
  • Great mobile app: iPhone and Android users alike love the Tile app.
  • Easy installation: The Tile Slim takes absolutely no technical know-how to set up.

However, the Tile Slim might not be the best choice if any of the following are deal breakers:

  • No keyring hole: you won’t be able to use your Tile Slim around a keyring.
  • Non-replaceable battery: after the Tile Slim’s battery runs out, you’ll have to purchase a new Tile.
  • Relatively soft 82 decibel siren: depending on your hearing and the size of your home, the Tile Slim’s siren may not be loud enough for you.
  • 100 foot range: the Tile Slim’s range is at the lower end for Bluetooth trackers, making you more dependent on Community Find.

At $30, the Tile Slim is reasonably priced, but keep in mind that it’ll only last a year, so it wouldn’t be in my first choice in a Bluetooth tracker.
