Best Wireless Outdoor Security Camera

eufyCam E Closeup

eufyCam E

As you’ll be using your security camera outside, having it be wireless certainly makes things a lot easier. What I like about the eufyCam E is the fact that its battery lasts for a year, which means I won’t have to be constantly buying and replacing new batteries. The camera has a bunch of other features I’m into like an 100-decibel siren, an integration with Alexa, plus 1080p HD, infrared night vision, a wide 140 degree field of view and two-way audio.

Of course, the eufyCam E isn’t without it’s negatives like no person detection and only paid cloud storage options. However, the fact that it comes with a 16 GB micro-SD card that can store up to a year’s worth of recorded footage does sweet the pot a little bit. You may also not be stoked that the eufyCam E requires the HomeBase, which will turn the cost from $180 to $238 if you don’t already have it. Still, this is a solid and durable outdoor wireless option.

The Best Budget Outdoor Security Camera

Gabe and the Blink XT2

In terms of price, the Blink XT2 is certainly on the lower end of outdoor security cameras, which can run well beyond $200. Its best features include its 1080p HD video, free cloud and local storage, two-way audio, infrared night vision, plus an integration with Amazon Alexa.

While I’m not thrilled at the lack of person detection, zoom, or the narrow, 110-degree field of view, I love that the camera is wireless, has activity zones, plus temperature monitoring! Plus, the Blink Home app has nice ratings, a 3.5 from the Apple store and a 3.7 from the Google Play store. Did I mention its battery has a life of two whole years?

The Best Wired Outdoor Security Camera

Canary Flex and Mount

Canary Flex

If you’re going to buy the Canary Flex, you should also invest in the Canary membership. Not only does it give you two-way audio, but it also throughs in person detection, package detection, 30 days of cloud storage, unlimited video downloads, activity zones, and even a safety button!

The camera itself meets industry standards with 1080p HD video display, infrared night vision, plus integrations with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. The only things I wish it had were local storage, zoom, plus a field of view wider than 116 degrees. But this is still a really solid option, especially if you want a camera that’s easy to plug in and go.

Ring Spotlight Cam Battery on Table

Ring Spotlight Cam Battery

If you’re looking for an outdoor security camera without any wires, look no further than the Ring Spotlight Cam Battery. It’s powered by a rechargeable, quick-release battery pack, meaning you won’t have to deal with hardwires of any kind. For backup, you can even add a second battery pack, or to charge it continuously, why not throw in a solar panel? With easy installation and the convenience of never having to recharge a battery, the Ring Spotlight Cam Battery offers the best of both worlds. It’s also part of the Ring Alarm security system, which includes indoor cameras, sensors, and if you want, the Ring Video Doorbell 2

This camera stands out from the others, mainly due to its LED light strips and 110-decibel siren, about as loud as a rock band or jackhammer. That way, you can stop crimes even before they happen, blaring the lights and the siren, plus speaking through two-way audio. That would convince me to run away fast!

With 1080p HD video display and an 140 degree field of view, you’ll be sure to collect great footage of your perp, whether it’s at night or during the day. You’ll be able to download your footage or view it on a cloud for up to 60 days so long as you buy a Ring Protect plan, which starts at only a few dollars a month. Plus, the Ring Spotlight Cam Battery works with Amazon Alexa, not surprising as Amazon owns Ring, plus Google Assistant

The Best Outdoor Security Camera with System

Nest Cam IQ Outdoor

Nest Cam IQ Outdoor

If you want an outdoor security camera with a larger security system available, look no further than the Nest Cam IQ Outdoor. Sure, it has the industry standard of 1080p HD, but with 4K sensors and HDR, you’ll get a much better picture than a typical outdoor camera. I also love this feature the Nest Cam IQ Outdoor has called Supersight. Basically, when the camera detects a person, it’ll automatically zoom in on them, which is a feature I haven’t seen in any other outdoor security camera. Throw in some awesome infrared night vision, two-way audio, and integrations with Google Assistant, Alexa, and Philips Hue light bulbs, and you can color me impressed.

Now let’s talk more about the security system that goes with the Nest Cam IQ Outdoor. Nest Secure is a pretty minimalist system of only a base station, contact sensors and key fobs you use to arm and disarm your system. If you want, you can add on a number of indoor or outdoor cameras, plus Nest Hello, their amazing video doorbell, or even the Nest Yale lock. For the most protection, I recommend signing up to 24/7 professional monitoring, which Nest outsources to Brinks home security. Let’s say your Nest Cam IQ Outdoor detects a person on your property when your system is armed, and you don’t respond to the notification. It’s the professional monitoring team that will check in and make sure that everything is okay, contacting the police if necessary.

The Best Smart Outdoor Security Camera

Arlo Pro 3 Spotlight

Arlo Pro 3

Aside from being a rare, outdoor, wireless camera, the Arlo Pro 3 really goes above and beyond in terms of video in particular. If you’ve read my other camera reviews, then you might already know that the current industry standard for video quality is 1080p HD. Well, the Arlo Pro 3 has 2560p HD plus 2K HDR, which makes for a really nice picture outdoors, especially. The camera also boasts a wide, 130 degree field of view, and with both color and infrared night vision, this camera really is unmatched when it comes to showing you the outdoors.

Now, some more of the Arlo Pro 3’s impressive features include its integrations with both Alexa, Google Assistant, and even Apple Watch, it’s spotlight, which can be manually controlled or motion-activated, as well as its AI capabilities. While the Arlo Pro 3 doesn’t come with any person detection for free, you can buy it, along with detection for packages, vehicles, and animals, through a paid subscription called Arlo Smart. That will also get you a safety button and activity zones, making your notifications more specific than ever before.

Pricing Rundown

Best Outdoor Cameras 2020 Pricing
Best Outdoor Cameras 2020 Pricing

As you can see, there’s a huge variation when it comes to the pricing of outdoor security cameras, with the most expensive at well over $200 and the least at just under $50. Of course, you get what you pay for, so I recommend buying a camera that’s quality for a bit more money, rather than a cheaper camera that might not have as many Necessary Features.

Regardless, be prepared to spend around $200 when you’re shopping for an outdoor security camera. It’s also important to keep in mind that some cameras require bridges or hubs, which could add to the cost as well, along with monthly or yearly cloud storage plans.

Outdoor Security Camera Methodology

House
The Best Outdoor Security Cameras of 2019

So just how did I pick out the outdoor security cameras on this list? In this section, I go over my methodology in detail, enabling you to be more knowledgeable when shopping on your own.

Design

Aside from simple aesthetics (do you like how the camera looks?) you should also consider whether you want your camera to be wired or wireless. While having a camera wired to your home will definitely make installation harder, you’ll never have to worry about changing a battery. The reverse is true with wireless cameras. An important consideration with wired cameras is how far the camera is from an outdoor outlet. Aside from that, some cameras require hubs, bridges, or DVRs, so make sure you take that cost into account before purchasing.

The main thing to look out for design-wise when selecting an outdoor security camera is durability. That comes in the form of a temperature range and an IP rating, which measures how susceptible an object is to both solids and liquids.

IP Ratings

Make sure wherever you live and its weather conditions are compatible with your outdoor security camera before purchasing— you’ll thank me later.

Features

Of course, like any security camera, I apply Security Baron’s Necessary Features Test to all of my outdoor cameras. Let’s dive into each.

Video

Arlo Pro 2 Video Display
Arlo Pro 2 Video Display

Display-wise, you should look for a camera that has at least 1080p HD video display, the current industry standard. I also prefer cameras that can zoom in optically and that have fields of view 120 degrees or greater. That’ll give you the widest, clearest and most detailed view possible.

Audio

Blink XT2 Speaker
Blink XT2 Speaker for Two-Way Audio

I look for cameras that have both speakers and microphones built-in, enabling two-way audio. This lets you speak to whoever the camera is on, which is very useful not only for telling your kids to come in for dinner, but also for scaring away intruders remotely. This is a security camera, after all!

Night Vision

Canary Flex Night Vision
Canary Flex Night Vision

When choosing a camera, make sure that it has infrared night vision rather than color night vision via a bright white light. Infrared is much more inconspicuous, definitely a quality you should be looking for in a smart security camera. Make sure you test out your camera’s night vision before buying.

Storage

Cloud Storage vs. Local Storage
Cloud Storage vs. Local Storage

All this beautiful footage is of no use if you don’t store it! I like cameras that offer both cloud and local storage, whether it’s through a Dropbox, micro-SD card, hard drive, or what have you.

Smart Platform Integrations

Blink XT2 and Amazon Echo
Blink XT2 and Amazon Echo

These are all smart security cameras, so they should fit right into your smart home, be it through Amazon, Google, or Apple. Make sure that your outdoor camera works with your voice assistant so that you can tell Alexa to show you your front yard!

Artificial Intelligence

Person Detection
Person Detection

I prefer cameras with person detection, which lets them differentiate between people and other moving objects like animals, cars, etc. Extra points if the camera has facial recognition, which, after a period of time, learns specific familiar faces, and unfamiliar faces. A.I makes your notifications smarter and more specific, making it easier to monitor your home with minimal effort.

Convenience

Make sure your camera is easy to install, as most of them are DIY. You can always hire a professional if you aren’t confident, but the majority of these cameras should be able to be installed in less than 20 minutes tops.

Value

As you saw from the pricing rundown, the tags on these cameras can vary, but make sure the price coordinates with the number of Necessary Features met.

Mobile Application

The Ring— Always Home App
The Ring— Always Home App

Your app is your mobile command center for your outdoor security camera where you’ll livestream footage, view storage, receive notifications, speak through two-way audio, and more. Make sure it has a good rating on either the Apple or the Google Play store, depending on your mobile device, of course. I prefer apps that are rated at least three-stars or higher, although it’s not necessarily a dealbreaker if it’s not as apps can always be updated.
