Your pet is more than just an animal that lives in your house. It’s your child, your best friend, the thing that keeps you smiling whether you’re just waking up or coming home from work. So when it comes to protecting your pet, you want only the best. I’m pleased to say that you’ve come to the right place!

Looking for pet cameras can be difficult, especially when you’re not super familiar with security cameras in general. There’s a lot to keep in mind, like the quality of the video, audio, and night vision, along with storage, smart platform integrations, and artificial intelligence. The majority of the cameras on this list have pet detection specifically, along with a ton of Security Baron’s other Necessary Features. Some cameras even go above and beyond for your pet, with highlight reels and treat dispensers! Let’s get started to find out the best cameras for your pet.

Netatmo Camera and Box

Netatmo Welcome

If you have an indoor pet, you’ll enjoy monitoring it throughout the day with the Netatmo Welcome indoor camera. It has 1080p HD video and will work with Google Assistant or Apple HomeKit, depending on your smart home ecosystem.

Pros: Netatmo provides free cloud and local storage so you can go back and view footage of your beloved pet. You can also ask a bot for the latest via Facebook Messenger, which is ridiculously convenient. Plus, the camera has infrared night vision, perfect for monitoring your pet overnight.

Cons: I wish the Netatmo Presence had two-way audio so you can talk to your pet. It also lacks integration with Amazon Alexa, so if you’re already in the Amazon ecosystem, this is probably not the best choice for you.

Tend Secure Lynx Pro

Tend Secure Lynx Pro

The Tend Secure Lynx Pro lets you see and speak to your pet whether they’re cozy on the couch or running in the backyard. Plus, it’s one of the more affordable cameras that work best for pets.

Pros: This camera has amazing quality, from its 1080p HD video display to its infrared night vision which is, for lack of a better term, clear as day. It works with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, allowing for hands-free commands. Finally, the camera can show you a pet highlight reel at the end of the day, a wonderful way to see what your pet has been up to when you’re gone. Of course, you’ll be notified whenever the camera detects movement from pets so you can stay updated throughout the day.

Cons: Unfortunately, the camera can’t zoom in at all, so it may not be the best for capturing small details. Its field of view is also a bit more narrow than I’d like at 100 degrees, limiting its coverage.

Installing the Arlo Ultra 4K Camera

Arlo Ultra

Let’s face it: your pet is probably all over the place, which is why you need a camera that can record them anywhere. With the Arlo Ultra camera, you’ll be notified whenever your pet steps in front of it, plus detection for packages, cars, and people, if you buy Arlo Smart Home for a small monthly fee.

Pros: I appreciate the Arlo Ultra for its artificial intelligence capabilities, infrared and color night vision, and integrations with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It also gives you local storage through the Arlo hub plus seven days of cloud storage, completely free. You’ll livestream footage and receive notifications on the Arlo app, which has fantastic ratings from iPhone and Android users alike.

Cons: In terms of cost, this camera isn’t too easy on your wallet. It also doesn’t provide the 4k resolution that’s promised, making the price even less reasonable.

Netatmo Presence

There’s a ton to love about the Netatmo Presence, like its clear infrared night vision, its floodlight, along with its HZO protection, making it the most durable security camera I’ve ever reviewed. You can use it indoors or outdoors, perfect for your cat or dog!

Pros: Choose from infrared night vision or color night vision stemming from the camera’s floodlight. It offers free cloud and local storage, plus integrations with Apple HomeKit, Google Assistant, and even Facebook Messenger (yes, you read that right). The camera also has amazing artificial intelligence capabilities like animal, person, and car detection, leading to notifications that matter more.

Cons: The Netatmo Presence lacks two-way audio, so you won’t be able to speak to your pet through the camera. It’s also on the higher-end for security cameras in terms of price.

Best For Dogs

Petcube Bites 2

Leaving your dog or cat alone can be hard, especially if it’s alone all day. However, the Petcube Bites 2 makes it a heck of a lot easier, allowing you to see your pet, speak to your pet, and even feed it treats!

Pros: This is one of the only security cameras I’ve seen that feeds your pet treats, either on a schedule or whenever you want. It also has pet detection, person detection, and even smart alerts for barking and meowing, making your notifications super specific. Plus, the camera itself is high quality with 1080p HD video, an 160 degree field of view, plus an integration with Amazon Alexa for voice commands.

Cons: Unfortunately, this camera is more than a little pricey. It’s also not a great choice for those in the Google ecosystem, as it doesn’t integrate with Google Assistant.

Pet Camera Methodology

Pet Camera Methodology
Pet Camera Methodology

When looking for security cameras for pets specifically, I’m looking for more than Security Baron’s Necessary Features, although they are also a huge component. Here’s what to look for in a pet camera:

  • Pet detection: You want a camera with the artificial intelligence to differentiate pets from other moving objects so you’re notified only about what matters. Extra points if it has person detection or facial recognition!
  • Clear video: As the industry standard is 1080p HD, you’ll want a camera that lets you clearly see your pet via livestream or saved footage.
  • Two-way audio: The camera should have a speaker and microphone, allowing you to speak to your pet remotely.
  • Smart platform integrations: If you’re already in a smart home ecosystem, then you’ll want a camera that integrates with your voice assistant be it Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant or even Siri.
  • Storage: Whether you want to see what your pet was up to during the day or you’re also using it as a security camera, your camera should offer both cloud and local storage, ideally free or at an affordable price.
  • Convenience: The camera shouldn’t be too difficult to set up because as a pet parent, you’ve got enough on your hands.

When looking for a pet camera, I have a couple helpful tips and tricks.

  • Make sure the camera’s respective app is highly-rated for your mobile device by checking reviews from either the Apple or Google Play store.
  • Make sure to place your camera somewhere that your pet can’t reach, as you don’t want it to mess up your beautiful view.

Recap of the Best Pet Cameras of 2019

As guilty as you might feel leaving your pet at home, you’ll feel less so with a smart security camera. Not only will you be able to see your pet, but with two-way audio, you can even speak to it, saying hello or making it do tricks. With notifications sent straight to your phone, it’s easy to keep track of your four-legged friends with pet camera.
