Netatmo Presence Review

Table of Contents

After reviewing the Netatmo Welcome Indoor Camera, I’m more than excited to see how their latest outdoor camera, the Netatmo Presence, works. With its integrated floodlight, it looks a lot more intense and industrial than any other outdoor security camera I’ve ever reviewed, but at $300, I’m hoping the features go above and beyond of what I usually expect from a security camera. Is the Netatmo Presence worth its hefty price-tag, or should you run away as quickly as a robber would when the floodlight turns on?

In this review, I’m diving deep into the technical specifications of the Netatmo Presence, plus my experience installing and using it. Of course, I’ll be comparing it to Security Baron’s Necessary Features, and comparing it to some top outdoor cameras. We have a ton to go over, so let’s get started!

Promised Features

From the Amazon page, it’s pretty clear that the Netatmo Presence is not your typical outdoor camera. It’s promising me a ton of features that I don’t see often, including:

  • HZO technology: This means that the Netatmo Presence is completely weatherproof, even if it’s fully immersed in water.
  • Person, car, and animal detection: This camera comes with all of the artificial intelligence capabilities I look for and more.
  • Free video storage: With an included micro-SD card and a Dropbox account, you won’t pay a cent for cloud or local storage.

This hefty price tag is starting to make sense, but let’s actually test out the camera and make sure it’s worth our while.

First Impressions

At just under eight inches high, the Netatmo Presence is one of the tallest cameras I’ve seen, most of which consists of the floodlight. Like I said before, the camera is a bit more industrial-looking than I’d like for a home security camera— it’s gray, brutalist design reminds me of a dystopian movie in the vein of Bladerunner: 2049. But this isn’t a beauty contest, and I’m more concerned about the camera’s design rather than its aesthetics.

The Netatmo Presence requires a 100-240 V power supply. You can either replace an existing lighting fixture with the camera, or install it wherever you want. You’ll also need Wi-Fi so you can connect the Netatmo Presence to the Netatmo Security app, allowing for remote control. The floodlight itself is equivalent to 120 watts, but uses less power as its LED. You’ll also be able to adjust its brightness.

Now, whenever I talk about outdoor security cameras, my major concern is durability. Depending on where you live, this camera may have to withstand rain, shine, snow, hail, you name it. So I want to make sure that it’ll continue working, even in the most extreme weather conditions. That’s where the HZO protection comes in. It completely protects the camera from solids and liquids, to the point where you can literally dunk it in a vat of water and it’ll continue to work normally. Plus, the Netatmo Presence works in temperatures from negative four to 122 degrees Fahrenheit, making it the most durable outdoor camera I’ve ever reviewed. Despite the camera’s rather austere design, I love that it’s as tough as it looks.

Necessary Features

Security Baron’s Necessary Features Test is the meat of any camera review. It’s where I rate the camera in terms of video, night vision, audio, storage, smart platform integrations, artificial intelligence, value, and convenience. Is this camera worth buying? Is it up to industry standards? Does it work as well as it says it does? All these questions and more will be answered in the below section.

The Netatmo Presence has 1080p HD video display, the industry standard. However, things take a downturn from here, as the camera can’t zoom at all and only has a field of view of 100 degrees, which is pretty narrow.

Night Vision

When it comes to night vision, I prefer infrared over color night vision, but fortunately with the Netatmo Presence, I don’t have to choose! It offers both infrared night vision and color night vision from the floodlight. In fact, you can switch it manually whenever you want to! Of course, the floodlight will automatically turn on when it detects a person, animal or car, making the camera’s presence quite obvious and preventing intrusions.

Audio Quality

A Security Baron Necessary Feature is two-way audio, which allows you to speak to whoever your camera is recording remotely. Unfortunately, the Netatmo Presence lacks two-way audio, which is why I can’t give it full marks for this category.

On a more positive note, I’m super happy that the Netatmo Presence has both cloud and local storage, completely free. The camera comes with an eight GB micro-SD card, and cloud storage through either an FTP server or Dropbox. Full marks for storage!

Smart Platform Integration

If you’re in the Google or Apple smart home ecosystems, then you’ll be pleased to know that the Netatmo Presence works with both Google Assistant and Apple HomeKit. They also have an integration with Facebook messenger, allowing you to tell your camera to turn its floodlight on the same way you would chat with a friend. Full marks!

Artificial Intelligence

Person Detection

Obviously, the whole point of getting a smart security camera in the first place is to monitor your home remotely, but that doesn’t mean you have to spend copious amounts of time checking every notification that comes your way. That’s where person detection comes in. The Netatmo Presence can actually differentiate between people and other moving objects like cars, animals, and the like. That way, you can receive super specific notifications whenever a person, car or animal is detected. Like I said before, the floodlight will automatically turn on whenever one of these three is detected, so your security happens automatically. I’m all for it!

Activity Zones

Netatmo also lets you set up activity zones, areas you want the camera to pay attention to and areas you want the camera to ignore. That’ll make your notifications matter even more, as you can be notified that there’s a person in your driveway as opposed to just a person. Full marks for artificial intelligence!

The Netatmo Security App

A smart security camera without a mobile application is sort of like a ship without a captain, sailing on the open seas without any monitoring! Fortunately for you, there’s the Netatmo Security app. It’s where you’ll livestream footage, receive alerts as well as set what kind of alerts you want, access storage, set up smart platform integrations, and even use a time lapse feature where you can see your day in a minute!

The app has awesome ratings, a four from the Google Play store and a 4.5 from the Apple store.

“Feature rich and great picture, love how it connects to the electrics and Wi-Fi rather than PoE or battery. No subscription needed either, with your own FTP server support, or if you do want cloud storage dropbox is supported. Nest could learn a thing or two…Fully support this product!”

wrote Android-user Adam Trout in a recent five-star review. Sounds good to me!

In this world of late capitalism, there are many smart outdoor security cameras to choose from, so this review would be nothing if I didn’t compare the Netatmo Presence to top competitors, specifically the Canary Flex and the Nest Cam IQ Outdoor. Who will come out on top? You’ll have to read on to find out!

Netatmo Presence vs. Canary Flex

Canary Flex

At only $169.99, the Canary Flex is $130 cheaper than the Netatmo Presence, but does it skimp on features? First, let’s talk about what the two cameras have in common. Both have 1080p HD video display, infrared night vision and a Google Assistant integration. However, the Canary Flex actually has a slightly wider field of view at 116 degrees compared to 100. It also has an integration with Amazon Alexa, making it a better choice for those in the Amazon ecosystem, plus it features package detection, for those Prime addicts among us.

However, there are many ways in which the Netatmo Presence is superior. It has that HZO Technology, while the Canary Flex does not, plus, it has color night vision in addition to infrared. And while the Netatmo Presence offers free cloud and local storage, the Canary Flex has no local storage and only 24 hours of free cloud storage. However, if you buy a Canary membership for $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year, you’ll get 30 days of cloud storage. You must buy the Canary membership to get person detection and two-way audio, as well as activity zones, a safety button, and livestreaming of any sort. Of course, the Canary Flex lacks the floodlight of the Netatmo Presence, plus, the Canary app has pretty dismal ratings on both the Apple and Google Play stores, an area where the Netatmo Presence excels. All in all, I recommend the Netatmo Presence over the Canary Flex. Sure, it’s more expensive in the short-term, but over time, you’ll save money by not having to pay for a monthly or yearly membership for person detection and cloud storage.

Netatmo Presence vs. Nest Cam IQ Outdoor

Nest Cam IQ Outdoor

Believe it or not, the Nest Cam IQ Outdoor is even more expensive than the Netatmo Presence at $349, so it better knock it out of the park to be worth its hefty price tag. Durability-wise, the Netatmo Presence reigns supreme, although the Nest Cam IQ Outdoor does have a larger temperature range of -40 to 113 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s also completely dust-tight, although it can’t be immersed in water while continuing to function normally. However, when it comes to video, the Nest Cam IQ Outdoor is the clear winner. Not only does it have 1080p HD, but it also has 4K sensors with HDR and intelligent imaging called Supersight, meaning it automatically zooms in on people. That’s right, this thing can zoom in 12 times, and has a wide, 130 degree field of view. For more detailed and beautiful video, Nest is one of the best in the game.

The Nest Cam IQ Outdoor also has two-way audio and an integration with Amazon Alexa and Philips Hue lightbulbs, which the Netatmo Presence lacks. However, it lacks color night vision, local storage, and affordable cloud storage options. You’ll only get three hours for free, and beyond that, you’ll need to invest in a pricey Nest Aware subscription.

Nest Aware Storage

Both cameras have person detection, although if you buy Nest Aware, you’ll also get facial recognition, making your notifications even more specific than that of the Netatmo Presence. However, the Nest app has much lower ratings than the Netatmo Security app, a 2.1 on the Apple store and a 3.8 on the Google Play store. Overall, I’d go with the Netatmo Presence if you’d like a more affordable option, but the Nest Cam IQ Outdoor if you’re all about that superior video, audio, and artificial intelligence capabilities. However, iPhone users should steer clear of any Nest cameras, as that pesky iPhone app is not very user-friendly.

Recap of the Netatmo Presence

Although the Netatmo Presence is certainly on the expensive side for an outdoor camera, I think it’s worth it given its amazing durability, artificial intelligence capabilities, smart platform integrations, and storage options. Like anything, of course, it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution, so let me break down who I think the Netatmo Presence would be right for.

Go with the Netatmo Presence if you’d like…

  • Integration with Google or Apple ecosystem: The Netatmo Presence works with Google Assistant and Apple HomeKit, allowing for voice commands.
  • Amazing A.I: Your camera can let you know when it detects people, animals and cars.
  • Super-durability: With HZO technology, there’s no camera that can better withstand harsh weather than the Netatmo Presence.

But avoid it if you were looking for…

  • Amazon integration: Unfortunately, the Netatmo Presence doesn’t work with Alexa, the most popular voice assistant.
  • Two-way audio: I was surprised that the Netatmo Presence lacks two-way audio, a Security Baron Necessary Feature.
  • Stellar video: With no zoom and a narrow field of view, the Netatmo Presence’s video is not top-notch by any means.

That’s it for me! For more great options, read Security Baron’s picks for 2019’s best home security cameras.
