The Best Fireproof Document Bags Of 2019

Table of Contents

Even though we live in a digital world, there are still many papers that are hard to replace. I’m thinking of everything from birth certificates to social security cards, from passports to photos that are close to your heart. And even with the best fire safety practices, fires can occur, so you want to make sure you keep your documents safe. That’s where fireproof document bags come in. Coated with fire-resistant fiberglass along with silicone to avoid itchiness, many fireproof bags can keep your documents safe in temperatures of 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit or more. Since the average room temperatures during a fire is 600 degrees Fahrenheit at eye level, according to the United States Department of Homeland Security, this is more than enough to keep your papers and cards safe.

After testing out a bunch of different fireproof document bags, these are my favorite picks of 2019 in terms of design, durability, and materials used. Let’s get started!

ENGPOW Fireproof File Folder

If you’re anything like me, then the thought of organizing your important documents fills your heart with joy. That’s why I’m so obsessed with the ENGPOW Fireproof File Folder; with its 13 pockets, I can protect and find my documents in the most convenient way possible.

Pros: The ENGPOW Fireproof File Folder has two layers of fiberglass, coated with silicone to protect your hands and reduce humidity. It’s enclosed by a zipper, which will give your documents the most protection. On top of that, the file folder can withstand temperatures up to 1,832 degrees Fahrenheit, one of the hottest I’ve seen in the marketplace. Plus, it’s water-proof, truly giving you the best of both worlds.

Cons: Although ENGPOW claims that the folder comes with color labels for the plastic divers, many people complained that these weren’t included. Instead, they had to make them or buy them separately, which can be a bit of a hassle.

COLCASE Fireproof Document Bag

Fiberglass, although fire-resistant, can be rather harsh on the hands and is actually dangerous to touch in its raw form. Not only does silicone protect your hands, but it also reduces humidity within the bag itself, which is why I’m so happy that the COLCASE bag has two layers of fiberglass, coated with silicone

Pros: At only $16.99, the COLCASE Fireproof Document Bag is about 30% less than the industry average, which is pretty significant. Like I said, it’ll protect your documents from fires without bothering your hands, given its silicone coating. Finally, if you don’t like your COLCASE Fireproof Document Bag for whatever reason, you can return it for an 100% money back guarantee.

Cons: While the COLCASE Fireproof Document Bag is water-resistant, it isn’t fully water-proof so it can’t completely protect your documents from water. It also has a velcro enclosure rather than a zipper, which won’t keep your documents quite as safe.

flybold Fireproof Document Bag Pouch

Let’s be honest: no one wants to spend a ton of money on fireproof document bags, no matter how useful they may be. Fortunately, the flybold Fireproof Document Bag Pouch costs only $10.99, less than half of the price of its competitors.

Pros: Not only is the flybold Fireproof Document Bag Pouch super affordably priced, but it’s also the only fireproof document bag I’ve reviewed that’s ASTM-certified to be fire-resistant. Although flybold doesn’t provide its specific ASTM rating, I do trust ASTM, an international organization that sets standards for products and services, in general. The bag itself is pretty lightweight at only 8.8 ounces, plus it’s made of two layers of silicone-coated fiberglass, my preference.

Cons: The flybold Fireproof Document Bag Pouch has a velcro enclosure rather than a zipper, which is not as protective. It’s also water-resistant but not water-proof, so I wouldn’t trust it to last through a hurricane or house flood.

Best Large Option

BLOKKD Fireproof Lock Box Bag

At 16 x 11.5 x 3 inches, the BLOKKD Fireproof Lock Box Bag is ideal for storing a larger pack of documents. Of course, it’s made of the silicon-coated fiberglass material that I’m looking for in a fireproof bag, as it won’t irritate the skin at all.

Pros: Not only does the BLOKKD Fireproof Lock Box Bag have a metal zipper, but it also has a velcro flap closure. For even more security, I recommend adding a combination lock as well. The BLOKKD Fireproof Lock Box Bag is also waterproof, which is impressive, and if you don’t like it, you can return it for a guaranteed refund. Talk about low-risk!

Cons: At $35.94, the BLOKKD Fireproof Lock Box Bag is the most expensive fireproof document bag that I’ve ever reviewed (the average is around $22). It’s also the heaviest at a whopping 17.92 ounces, which, combined with the amount of documents it can hold, might end up being pretty heavy.

Vemingo Fireproof Bag

From passports to credit cards to any important document that you can’t easily replace, there’s a lot to store in a fireproof document bag. The Vemingo Fireproof Bag makes organizing your documents simple, with pockets specifically designed for various types of documents and cards

Pros: I love that the Vemingo Fireproof Bag has a zipper, plus a hook and a loop to keep your documents safe. It’s made of two layers of non-itchy silicone coated fiberglass, so it won’t irritate your hands when you hold it. Did I mention it’s temperature maximum is 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit? That’s actually the highest I’ve seen from a fireproof document bag, so color me impressed!

Cons: The Vemingo Fireproof Bag is water-resistant and not water-proof, so it may not be the best if you’re expecting a flood or storm. Plus at 16.16 oz, the bag itself is a little weighty, which could be a problem depending on who would have to carry it in the event of an emergency.

Fireproof Document Bag Methodology

Fireproof Document Bags

Of course, I tested out all my products to make sure the company’s claims are true, but that can be a little tricky when it comes to fireproof document bags. For the average person who doesn’t want to set things on fire, how can you shop for a fireproof document bag and know what to look for? Here are some features that are important to me:

  • Size and weight: As they’re intended to hold documents, most document bags are around 15 inches tall and 11 inches wide, although some are thicker than others. Consider the size based on how many important documents you want to protect. And as you may grab this during a fire, you want to make sure it’s not too heavy, either. I’ve seen fireproof document bags ranging from 8.8 ounces all the way up to nearly 18, so that’s something to keep in mind as well.
  • Enclosure: I prefer a metal zipper enclosure rather than a velcro enclosure, as it provides more protection. Extra points if there’s also a hook, loop, or area for a combination lock, maximizing your security.
  • Materials: All of the fireproof document bags I’ve reviewed are made of the fire-resistant material fiberglass. However, fiberglass irritates the skin, which is why the bags also have a silicone coating. To avoid humidity within the bag, you can also place a silicone pack along with your documents.
  • Temperature maximum: Although the average house fire only goes up to 600 degrees Fahrenheit at eye level, you want to make sure your fireproof document bag can withstand temperatures well above this threshold.
  • Waterproof: In this climate, you never know what what weather-related events can occur (not to mention, spills!). For this reason, I prefer bags that are water-proof, or water-resistant at the very least.
  • Price: The average fireproof document bag costs around $22, although that will differ based on the size of the bag, its enclosures, etc.

Fireproof Document Bag Tips

Fire is no joke, which is why I recommend these best practices while using a fireproof document bag:

  • Don’t run after them: If you are in the middle of a house fire, try to get out as quickly as possible, even if it means leaving your fireproof document bags behind. After all, their purpose is to protect your documents from a fire, so you can rest assured they’ll be safe without risking your own personal safety.
  • Test it out: While I can’t exactly recommend that you light your fireproof document bag on fire, you can do a water test by placing a sheet of paper in the bag and pouring water on top of it. I recommend doing this with scrap paper, in case the bag isn’t as water-resistant as the company claims it is.

Recap of the Best Fireproof Document Bags of 2019

And that’s all I have for the best fireproof document bags of 2019! Although no one wants to think about a home or office fire, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t prepare for the worst. Documents like drivers licenses, insurance cards, or even just a piece of art your child don’t have to be sacrificial lambs in a fire. With a simple solution, you can have them forever, or at least for as long as you want.
