Air Horn Methodology

When it comes to selecting your air horn, I tend to gravitate towards a few key factors:

  • Need: I would select a higher decibel air horn if you’d like to use it on a moving vehicle, but if you’re just using it on your person, the volume can be lower.
  • Volume: Volume is measured in decibels. I’ve seen air horns anywhere from 115 to 150 decibels loud, with the average being 131.
  • Material: Air horns made of steel or chrome will last longer than plastic air horns, which can crack in the cold and turn squeaky.
  • Weight and dimensions: Again, if you’re carrying it on your person, you should look for a more lightweight air horn, as opposed to a vehicle, where the weight doesn’t matter as much. The same goes for the air horn’s dimensions.
  • Price: Air horns can range in price from about six dollars to about 30, and it’s really dependent on the size, volume, and material. The average cost of the air horns that I’ve reviewed was around $19.

Air Horn Tips

Here are some best practices when using an air horn:

  • Short bursts: Air horns are very loud, so when you use them there’s no need to hold the sound for a while. Believe me, your neighbors will thank you!
  • Only use outside: There’s no need to use an air horn indoors as this will make the sound even louder.
  • Keep at arm’s length: You want to protect your own ears as well! You can also use ear plugs for added protection.
