When it comes to camping, there are a lot of costs involved, from the tent to bear spray to the pad you’ll be sleeping on. But one thing you don’t have to spend a lot of money on is your all weather blanket; that is, if you buy the windproof and waterproof UST Survival Blanket.

Pros: Made from three ply polyethylene with reinforced fabric and polyester, this blanket is built to keep you as warm and dry as humanly possible. It’s pretty large, at 83 by 60 inches. Plus, it comes with a generous two-year warranty, which, added to it’s low price, means that this purchase is very low risk, to say the least.

Cons: UST needs to redesign their grommet holes, as they tend to rip part of the blanket when used.

TEEHOME Waterproof Blanket

TEEHOME Waterproof Blanket

Even when I’m camping, I want to be as comfortable as possible. That’s why I like the TEEHOME Waterproof Blanket, three pounds and 11 ounces of warmth and protection from the elements.

Pros: Made of reinforced polyester with a nylon backing, the TEEHOME Waterproof Blanket will protect you from water and wind alike. If you don’t like it, you can return it for a full refund or exchange within 30 days, no questions asked. Personally, I’m also a fan of it’s blue color, which happens to be my favorite.

Cons: I found that even though TEEHOME claims their blanket is machine-washable, a lot of the waterproof coating rubbed off after I threw it in the wash— rats!

DOWN UNDER OUTDOORS Stadium Blanket

DOWN UNDER OUTDOORS Stadium Blanket

Does anything feel as good as being enveloped by soft fabrics? The DOWN UNDER OUTDOORS Stadium Blanket is one of the only all weather blankets I’ve seen with a fleece lining, ideal for sleeping with at night.

Pros: With a polyurethane-coated polyester on the outside and a lovely fleece on the inside, the DOWN UNDER OUTDOORS Stadium Blanket feels incredibly comfortable on your skin. It’s outside is waterproof and the entire blanket will keep you protected from the wind. Did I mention it’s machine-washable

Cons: While this blanket certainly feels good, it isn’t the warmest all weather blanket I’ve ever reviewed, so I would recommend it for warm or temperate climates.

Titan Survival Space Blankets

Titan Survival Space Blankets

Whether you’re staying warm at night, sitting outside for a picnic or trying to avoid getting wet, the Titan Survival Space Blankets are a great option. Made from aluminized mylar, they’re waterproof and windproof, available in a convenient pack of five.

Pros: Amazingly, these 52 by 82 inch blankets retain 90% of your body heat, the highest percentage I’ve seen from an all weather blanket. They’re available in orange, red and purple, plus camo, which could be good if you’re camping in particular. Finally, Titan Paracord gives you a lifetime warranty with your Titan Survival Space Blankets, so if you don’t like them, there’s no risk to you at all in terms of cost.

Cons: These blankets aren’t necessarily meant to be reused, as they fall apart much more quickly than a reusable all weather blanket— I’d recommend them to someone looking for a single usage blanket.

Grabber All Weather Blanket

Grabber All Weather Blanket

If you think about it, a blanket doesn’t have any warmth in and of itself; rather, the point of a blanket is to retain the body heat that you produce naturally. That’s why I’m obsessed with the Grabber All Weather Blanket, which reflects back up to 80% of your body heat.

Pros: The Grabber All Weather Blanket is made of fiber scrim along with aluminized plastic, creating a product that is both waterproof and windproof. Price-wise, it’s a bit below average and definitely won’t break the bank. Plus, it comes in blue, olive green, or red, which is a nice little variation.

Cons: Although I’m glad the Grabber All Weather Blanket has grommets for mounting it down on the ground, the grommets themselves aren’t heavy duty enough, in my opinion.

Just how did I review the all weather blankets on this list? Here are some things to look out for in your own shopping journey:

  • Dimensions: All weather blankets come in many sizes, so you’ll want to get a good idea of what size you want before you go shopping. If you’re one person using it as a blanket, it can be smaller, but if you’d like your entire family to use the blanket at a picnic, you might want a larger option.
  • Weight: If you are taking your all weather blanket on a hiking trip, I’d look for a more lightweight option, like the Titan Survival Space Blankets which weigh only 9.6 ounces. However, there’s a huge variation when it comes to size. I’ve reviewed all weather blankets that weigh anywhere from 9.6 up to 71 ounces. Again, this choice will come down to your needs and personal preference.
  • Material: Most all weather blankets are made out of polyester or aluminized plastic, but windproof and waterproof materials. Some, like the DOWN UNDER OUTDOORS Stadium Blanket, even have a fleece lining, which is better if you’re looking to sleep with your all weather blanket.
  • Waterproof and windproof: Of course, all weather blankets should keep you protected from water and the wind, which is why they’re made out of seemingly unconventional materials for a blanket, as we just learned.
  • Machine washable: This is not a necessity, but especially if you are planning to sleep with your all weather blanket, it’s convenient to get one that you can throw in the wash. However, make sure that washing it won’t ruin it’s waterproof coating, as we saw with the TEEHOME Waterproof Blanket.
  • Price: All weather blankets tend to fall in a range from $12 to $30, with the average being around $22.

All Weather Blanket Tips

Of course, simply having an all weather blanket isn’t necessarily going to keep you warm, especially if you’re camping on a freezing and windy night. Here are some tips to maximize warmth and safety when using an all weather blanket:

  • Prepping your location: After choosing a spot that’s relatively dry and flat, be sure to smooth out the area where you sleep with your knees, especially if it’s snowy. Making a little trough for yourself will reduce heat loss, particularly if you surround yourself with extra gear.
  • Radiant barrier: Aside from having a space blanket over you for warmth, I recommend taping one to your tent’s ceiling to reduce excess moisture. Don’t forget your duct tape!
  • Medical uses: Aside from keeping you warm, all weather blankets can also be used in case of a broken or sprained arm as a makeshift sling, or even a temporary compression bandage!
