The Best Door Stoppers of 2019

Table of Contents

Door stoppers can be used in many different ways, from keeping a door open, to keeping it closed, to prevent slamming (and injuries at that). They’re a simple way not only to avoid damaging your walls, but also to keep you safe, especially if you happen to have a home intrusion, heaven forbid. However, when you search for “door stoppers” on Amazon, you’re shown over 7,000 results. I know you don’t have time to read all of their customer reviews and research each door stopper individually— that’s where I come in.

This list covers the best door stoppers in 2019 in terms of materials, weight, floor type, dimensions, and other important factors. Let’s get started!

Home Premium Rubber Door Stopper

Out of all the door stoppers I’ve tested (and believe me, there were dozens), the Home Premium Rubber Door Stopper worked the best. Available in brown, black, gray or white, it should work with any room in your house whether you have tile, concrete, wood, carpet or vinyl flooring.

Pros: Aside from it’s versatility, I also like that this package comes with four stoppers for a really reasonable price. Of course, they’re designed to avoid slippage, as that would defeat the purpose of the door stopper in the first place. And if you don’t like the Home Premium Rubber Door Stopper for whatever reason, the company offers a lifetime money-back guarantee.

Cons: I noticed a pretty strong rubbery smell from the Home Premium Rubber Door Stopper, but it’s nothing a little air freshener couldn’t fix.

Best For Bathroom

Wundermax Door Stopper

There are few things more embarrassing than walking in on someone in the bathroom (other than being walked in on yourself). Fortunately, there’s the Wundermax Door Stopper, a pack of three stoppers that should cover the majority of the bathrooms in your house.

Pros: I love that the Wundermax Door Stopper comes in gray, black, orange, red, or white, as I can match it to my bathroom’s color scheme. It also includes three folder hooks, allowing me to hang the stoppers on my bathroom door when I’m not using them. Plus, Wundermax will give you your money back if they don’t stop your door properly, no questions asked!

Cons: The Wundermax Door Stopper is pretty low to the ground, so I recommend it only for doors with small gaps.

Best For Bugs

Tenby Easy-Step Door Stops

No one hates bugs more than me, which is why I’m so thankful for the Tenby Easy-Step Door Stops. Rather than a rubber door stop which you need to bend down and adjust, I can keep doors closed simply with a tap of the foot, keeping me further away form dreaded insects.

Pros: Available in Satin Nickel, Chrome, Brass or Bronze, the Tenby Easy-Step Door Stops comes with matching screw holes for easy installation. It has a clearance of two inches, plus, it’s made out of aluminum, so you can avoid that strong rubber smell. Whether you have hardwood, concrete, tile or carpeted floors, the Tenby Easy-Step Door Stops will make sure that your room is bug-free.

Cons: I wouldn’t recommend the Tenby Easy-Step Door Stops for long-term use as it’s not the most well made door stopper I’ve ever reviewed.

Best For Carpet

Quality Clever Decorative Rubber Door Stopper

Carpets can be a little difficult to use a door stopper with, especially if they’re made of a softer material. But they’re not match for the Quality Clever Decorative Rubber Door Stopper, which was designed specifically with uneven surfaces in mind.

Pros: With a 1.6 inch clearing, this gray door stopper won’t slip or skid, even on the softest of carpets. I would recommend it for doors with larger gaps in particular. Plus, it comes with a hanger with 3M tape so you can store it easily on your door, wall, or any flat surface.

Cons: I wouldn’t recommend the Quality Clever Decorative Rubber Door Stopper for doors with gaps smaller than 1.6 inches.

Door Stopper Methodology

Door Stopper Methodology
Door Stopper Methodology

Door stoppers may seem simple, but there’s actually a lot of factors to consider when picking one for your home, including:

  • Material: Most of the door stoppers that I’ve reviewed are made out of rubber, which is ideal for preventing scratches or damage to your door or wall. However, if it’s a spring mechanism then it’s probably made out of a metal like aluminum with a rubber tip for skid prevention.
  • Color options: This is going in your house, so you want to make sure it coordinates color-wise. I’ve seen door stoppers in every shade of the rainbow!
  • Dimensions: This part’s super important. Before you buy a door stopper, measure the gap between the door and the floor to determine what size will work for you, typically measured in inches. Not all door stoppers will work with all doors, so if you’re going to take away anything from this methodology, it’s this.
  • Anti-slip: Any decent door stopper should be textured with an anti-slip design so that the door stays in place.
  • Floor compatibility: Some door stoppers are better for different types of flooring, like wood, vinyl, carpet, tile, and more. Make sure you get the right door stopper for your type of flooring.
  • Price: Door stoppers range from about four dollars to 12, and many companies offer discounts if you buy more than one.

Door Stopper Tips

Now for some best practices while using a door stopper:

  • DIY: If you’re looking for a temporary and quick solution, you can use different items as door stoppers, like a tube from a paper towel roll, a large basket, a vase, or even a jar full of change.
  • Bug-out bag: You should include a door stopper in your bug-out bag, basically a kit that contains everything you’d need to survive for three days after a disaster.
  • Security system: Although door stoppers are a great way to keep people out, you shouldn’t totally depend on them for your home’s security. I recommend using them in tandem with a security system.
