SentrySafe SFW123EU Fireproof Waterproof Safe

SentrySafe’s SFW123EU Fireproof & Waterproof Safe is designed to withstand any number of extreme scenarios, whether it be fire, water, or blunt physical damage. It can withstand up to 1700 °F for up to an hour, easily making this one of the most fire-resistant safes on the market.

Pros:

  • Door trays: While most safes only have an inner cavity that provides storage space for valuable items, this safe provides extra space and organization with two unique inner door trays. Here small items can be placed in an orderly fashion, while keys and jewelry can be hung on handy hooks.
  • Waterproof: A great feature of this safe is that it is also somewhat waterproof. Through the industry standard ETL verification process, this safe has shown to repel water up to 8” for 24 hours. This allows plenty of time to recover the case in the event of flooding.
  • Multiple shelves: While not a groundbreaking technology or manufacturing technique, the inclusion of multiple shelves in this safe does help keep valuables organized. Having to sift through valuables that maybe haven’t been seen or organized in years is a hassle; having the extra shelves helps provide the framework for better organization.

Cons:

  • Plastic handle: For such a rugged piece of equipment, the plastic handle seems somewhat flimsy. In case of an extreme fire, this handle will probably not survive.
  • Combination can’t be changed: This safe comes with its own preset combination, which cannot be altered by the user. Depending on the security needs of the purchaser, this code may need to be heavily protected as it cannot be changed if compromised.

AmazonBasics Fire Resistant Box Safe

AmazonBasics produces a great Fire Resistant Box Safe that features adjustable shelves and a carpeted interior, making it a safe place to store items both delicate and awkwardly shaped. With a 14 gauge steel body construction, this safe can withstand heats up to 1200 °F for up to twenty minutes.

Pros:

  • Adjustable shelf: One of the benefits of having an adjustable shelf inside a safe is that awkward or large objects can still be placed inside. Many similar safes, like the ones found in a hotel, often only have room on each shelf for slim or small items.
  • Carpeted interior: This safe has a carpeted interior, which is helpful for protecting delicate or fragile items in case of emergency or just for when placing and removing them from the safe. If there is say, an earthquake, it is nice to have the peace of mind that the contents inside the safe won’t be bashing against a steel wall.
  • Can be bolted to the ground: This safe has the ability to be bolted straight to the floor. This is great for those who are worried about the safe potentially being carried away during a robbery.

Cons:

  • Needs 9 volt battery: While most electronic safes will need batteries to charge them, this one needs a 9V battery, which is rather uncommon. Many safes require AA batteries, which many people will probably have laying around their home for when it comes time to change the battery.
  • Gap when door closes: There is a bit of an open gap between the safe frame and the door. This could be a problem in case of a serious flood.

Stack-On PFS-1608 Personal Steel Fireproof Safe

Stack-On’s PFS 1608 Personal Steel Fireproof Safe is a durable and fire-resistant safe that isn’t going to hurt shoppers’ bank accounts too much. With resistance of up to 1400 °F for thirty minutes, this safe has some of the best protection I’ve seen on the market today.

Pros:

  • 3-8 digit combination: A convenient aspect of the Stack-On PFS-1608 Personal Steel Fireproof Safe is that combinations can be created with three to eight digits. This level of personalization is great for those whose favorite number combination doesn’t have a standard number of digits.
  • Door swings open over 180 degrees: This safe from Stack-On has a door with hinges that allows for a wide range of movement, letting the door open over 180° from its closed resting spot. This is great for placing and removing large items that may otherwise bump into the door, making transferring difficult.
  • Price: The Stack-On PFS-1608 Personal Steel Fireproof Safe is a bargain, about half the cost of some of it’s competitors.

Cons:

  • Hard to fit documents: Standard-sized documents and folders will end up just shy of fitting perfectly, as the Stack-On PFS-1608 Personal Steel Fireproof Safe’s padding cuts into the storage space. However, this may not be a big problem unless you’re trying to store many or delicate documents.
  • Heavy for a small safe: Weighing around fifty pounds, this safe is rather heavy and can be hard to set up without someone else’s help.

Best For Mounting On Walls

AmazonBasics Home Keypad Safe

This AmazonBasics Home Keypad Safe allows users to mount the safe either on a wall or on the floor – or both. The safe also feature pry-resistant hinges that are concealed in the interior of the safe.

Pros:

  • Hinge-free exterior design: This safe provides an extra layer of protection by concealing the upper and lower hinges within the cavity of the safe. This prevents any possible advanced prying techniques from being able to access the contents of the safe.
  • Pre-drilled mounting holes: This AmazonBasics safe allows users to bolt the safe not only to the floor, but the walls as well. This is perfect for those hoping to hide the safe in a secure place or to avoid water damage in case of a flood.
  • Lightweight: Weighing around thirty-eight pounds, this is one of the lighter safes available on the market. It makes mounting installation on a wall or transport easy enough for most users to do alone or with only minimal assistance.

Cons:

  • Not as fire resistant: Due to the construction materials of this safe, it is not as fire-resistant as other safes. Its walls are thinner and thus more vulnerable to extreme heat.
  • Lightweight: Unless this safe is successfully hidden or bolted to a wall, the lightweight may make it an easy target for theft. It can easily be carried by most individual people.

Best For Travel

SentrySafe 1200 Fireproof Box with Key Lock

SentrySafe’s 1200 Fireproof Box is designed for easy and quick access while traveling. With a fire-resistance up to 1550 °F, this safe is ideal for protecting your valuables even in the hottest of fires.

Pros:

  • Travel handle: This safe has a handle that folds flush into the frame of the case, extremely useful if you’re mobile.
  • Can withstand 1550 degree fire: With fire-resistance of 1550 °F, this safe is one of the most fire-resistant models on the market, lasting for up to half an hour!
  • Protection for CDs, DVDs, and USB: Due to the high resistance level against heat, the SentrySafe 1200 Fireproof Box with Key Lock can protect the integrity of CDs, DVDs, and USB. That’s super important, as data stored on these pieces of hardware can be as valuable as physical objects, if not more.

Cons:

  • Moisture can build up: One of the vulnerabilities of this safe is that it is not moisture-proof. The manufacturer recommends airing out the safe on a regular basis to prevent moisture from creating mold or degrading the contents.
  • Files fold or curl inside: Any letter-sized documents will be a very tight fit in this safe, and documents that are larger will need to be folded or curled in order to fit properly.

Fireproof Safe Methodology

Best Fireproof Safes Review
Best Fireproof Safes Review

When choosing a safe, it’s important to consider many factors to make sure it’s the right one for your home and for the items you’ll be storing in it. Here are some key factors to look at when selecting your fireproof safe:

  • Shelves: Think about the items you’d like to keep in your safe. Are they large or small? Depending on what you’re thinking of, your safe may require some shelves for organization. Think about it; if there’s an emergency, you’ll probably be grabbing things from your safe in a hurry, which is why shelves can be so useful in helping you to quickly locate products. Some safes have adjustable or removable shelves so you can completely customize the inside of the safe, while staying as organized as possible.
  • Storage: When it comes to storing your fireproof safe, you typically have two options, either the floor or a wall. Many safes come with pre-drilled holes for mounting on the floor or wall, or even bolting to the wall or floor for an extra layer of security. This is also helpful if you live in an area where flooding is common. If that’s the case, I recommend getting a fireproof safe with water resistance to help mitigate some damage. I recommend placing your safe in your closet or another area that’s not super obvious or accessible, like your living room. Make sure it’s out of sight, yet easy for you to find if you need to.
  • Level of fire resistance: Perhaps the most critical specification is the safe’s fire resistance, which is measured by two factors: temperature and time length, measured through a process called ETL verification. I’ve seen safes that can range up to 1,700 degrees Fahrenheit for up to an hour on the higher-end. For the most security, select a safe with the most fire resistance available.
  • Cost – Fireproof safes can have a wide range of costs, much of which can be chalked up to how resistant to fire the safe is, although that isn’t always a steadfast rule. Some safes with high fire resistance can actually be quite affordable, for example. Another factor in determining the safe’s cost is it’s size, as the larger safes will cost more. On top of that, safes with extra features, like removable or adjustable shelves, wall mounting capabilities, and additional protection, like waterproofing, will probably cost more than standard offerings.

Fireproof Safe Tips

Not sure which fireproof safe is right for you? Read below to find out some tips on what to look for when making your decision:

  • What will you be storing in your safe? Before you lay down some cash for a fireproof safe, it’s important to consider what you’ll actually be storing in it, as that will greatly affect your choice. Consider not on the safe’s dimensions, but also the shelves inside it, which may be adjustable and removable for total customization.
  • Will you travel with it? If you’re buying a safe for on the go, you want to make sure it’s lighter-weight and has handles. The heaviest safes are best used in homes, mounted or bolted to the floor or wall to provide the optimal level of security.
  • How much are you willing to spend? Of course, cost is going to be a huge factor in picking your fireproof safe, so consider the monetary value of the items you’ll be storing as a jumping off point.
