Hard hats are necessities if you work in the fields of manufacturing, construction and more. However, with so many different styles, brands and features out there, it can be difficult to know which hard hat is the best to protect yourself. Of course, with heavy falling objects there’s very little room for error, which is why I tested out dozens of hards hats for their strength, durability, protection against electrical issues, and more. Evolution Deluxe 6161 Hard Hat

When it comes to suspension, the more suspension points, the better protected you’ll be against falling objects. That’s why I gravitate towards the Evolution Deluxe 6161 Hard Hat, which has a six point suspension for spreading out the force of an impact.

Pros: The Evolution Deluxe 6161 Hard Hat comes in more colors than any other hard hat I’ve reviewed, including white, gray, orange, red, yellow, and green. It even comes with a sweatband with an Egyptian cotton core along with PU coating to absorb your sweat! Of course, the Evolution Deluxe 6161 Hard Hat has been okayed by the American National Standards Institute, definitely a necessary feature for a hard hat in my book.

Cons: The Evolution Deluxe 6161 Hard Hat is only Class C certified, so it doesn’t include electrical protection.

Hard Hat Methodology

Hard Hat Methodology

Whether you’re shopping for a hard hat for yourself or helping out a friend, here are some key factors to look for:

  • Material: Hard hats can be made of everything from polyethylene or polycarbonate resin, both forms of plastic, or fiberglass, aluminum, or textiles. The most common material used is polyethylene as it is lightweight and strong.
  • Weight: As you’ll most likely be wearing your hard hat for hours, you want to make sure that it’s as lightweight as possible. Of all the hard hats that I’ve reviewed, the average was 9.28 ounces, less than a pound.
  • Adjustability: The majority of the hard hats I’ve reviewed are adjustable in terms of sizing, ranging from 6.5 to eight inches of adjustability.
  • Suspension type: Most hard hats have ratchet suspension, meaning you can adjust their size through a small knob. There’s also pin lock suspensions, adjustable through a pin and hole one-touch suspensions, which you can squeeze and slide with one hand, and swing-ratchet suspensions, which self-adjust to your head. This category is more of a personal preference.
  • ANSI standards: The American National Standards Institute makes sure that products are safe to use, so any hard hat you buy should be ANSI-approved.
  • Class: Class E, or Electrical hats can handle up to 20,000 volts of electricity, while Class G, General hard hats can handle up to 2,200. Class C hats, which stands for Conducive, offer no electrical protection. This category is really dependent on your needs and where you’ll be using your hard hat.
  • Temperature range: Some hard hats are designed to be used in high or low temperatures, so take that into consideration when choosing your hard hat.
  • Price: The average hard hat costs about $35, although I’ve seen products range from $8 to over $90.

Hard Hat Tips

What are some best practices for using your hard hat? Here’s what I can tell you:

  • Consider accessories: If you’re planning on using your hard hat with something like safety goggles, make sure it’s compatible before you buy.
  • Inspect daily: Every morning when you take out your hard hat, you should inspect it for holes, scratches, cracks, or even a chalky shell, which may mean that it’s been damaged by ultraviolet radiation.
  •  Don’t leave it in the sun: If your hard hat is in the sun too much, the shell can be damaged.
