We can all agree that traveling has a tendency to be a tad stressful. You’re often zipping around unfamiliar surroundings, lugging your precious belongings behind you and hoping everything and everyone arrives safely. Of course, while you can never fully guarantee that a trip will be smooth sailing, there are precautionary measures you can take. And one of these is investing in a solid luggage lock.

Luggage locks are obviously a good way to keep your suitcase secure. They help eliminate the possibility of your bag accidentally popping open in transit (which can lead to lost items or potential embarrassment). Even better, they lessen the chances that someone will try and break into your suitcase. We think that’s reason enough to purchase a luggage lock. Tarriss TSA Luggage Lock

Durable and dependable, the Tarriss Luggage Lock allows you to travel with peace of mind. The body is made from zinc alloy which lets it withstand bumps and bruises. And the flexible cable allows you to quickly place it through zippers.

Pros: Tarriss makes locks that are TSA-approved and equipped with search alert so you know if someone has opened said lock. The relatively large dials mean that it’s simple to read and manipulate the combination. Perhaps best of all, the Tarriss Luggage Lock can be used in conjunction with a variety of bags and settings– from large suitcases and carry-ons to backpacks, purses and even gym lockers.

Cons: Some customers have reported that their Tarriss went missing at some point in transit. Additionally, the cable is on the larger side so it can occasionally be difficult stringing it through some zippers.

Luggage Lock Methodology

Best Luggage Locks Review
Best Luggage Locks Review

As we doggedly searched for the best luggage locks on the market today, we determined these features were the most important criteria to consider:

  • TSA Approved: A handful of luggage locks that are sold have been designated as TSA-approved. This means that they’re designed to be used in conjunction with a “master key” available to TSA agents. In other words, should an agent need to access your bag, they can easily do so without needing you present. Why is this advantageous? Well, the TSA has the right to search your luggage whenever they determine it’s necessary. And if you have a lock that’s not TSA approved, they are allowed to break it and have no obligation to replace it. Hence, you’ll be forced to travel the next leg of your journey without a lock and you will have to fork over additional cash if you choose to buy a new one.
  • Open Alert Indicators: Some TSA approved locks are made with open alert indicators. As the name suggests, this nifty feature lets you know that someone (presumably a TSA agent) has opened your lock. Typically, the indicator shifts from green to red when it’s opened. You can reset it the next time you use your lock.
  • Size/Weight: Luggage is already cumbersome enough. You don’t want a heavy lock that will further weigh you down or constantly bang against your thigh as you navigate a terminal. That’s why we purposely looked for options that are compact and lightweight.
  • Lock Type: As with so many safety gadgets, there are a variety of types of locks on the market. You can purchase combination locks, key locks, cable locks or key card locks. We researched all kinds, though one isn’t necessarily a better option than another. It comes down to preference, specific brands and whether you’re more likely to remember a key or a combination.

Luggage Locks Tips

  • Mind Your Valuables: There’s no question that having a luggage lock is a great theft deterrent. A person is more likely to steal from a suitcase that can be opened quickly. Nevertheless, if someone is absolutely determined to break into your bag they likely will. Therefore, we recommend that you keep all of your valuables, important documents, etc. in your carry-on.
  • Multiple Locks: If you have need for multiple locks, it’s best to use a variety of types. This makes it more challenging for a person to get into your luggage and could very well convince said thief to move along.
  • Lock your carry-on: We realize that keeping your carry-on locked sounds like a pain. However, if you truly want to have peace of mind, it makes sense to lock it. You can have total confidence that your belongings are secure even if you fall asleep or step away to use the restroom.
  • Keep Your Key on You: If you decide to buy a lock that comes with a key, you should keep it on you at all times when traveling (along with the rest of your valuables).

Recap of Best Luggage Locks

At Security Baron, we think it’s a savvy move to invest in a good luggage lock (especially if you’re a frequent traveler). While they may not be wholly foolproof, locks are a great deterrent to potential thieves. Moreover, they’ll help keep your belongings secure in your suitcase. After all, the last thing you want to see after a long flight are your belongings bursting out of your suitcase and onto the luggage carousel.
