Best Non-Slip Mats Methodology

Woman Doing Yoga on Mat

When I made the easy decision to invest in a non-slip mat, these are the attributes I considered:

  • Antibacterial protection: Let’s face it— a lot of non-slip mats are used in locations where they are prone to getting wet or damp. You want one that’s made with antibacterial protection to curb the growth of mildew, mold and bacteria.
  • Machine washable: By their very nature, non-slip mats are going to get a little dirty or dingy. After all, you’ll be standing around on them quite a bit. If possible, select one that’s machine washable and easy to clean.
  • Adhesion: A number of non-stick mats (especially models intended for bathroom use) are made with suction cups. These ensure the mat will stay affixed to the floor. Certainly, the greater the number of suction cups on the mat, the more secure it will be. I should note, however, that suction cups don’t work as well on tubs that have a textured surface. In that scenario, you’ll want a smoother, heavier mat that’s kept in place by both weight and water pressure.
  • Size: When choosing a mat, size will obviously always be a factor. You want to select one that fits your space adequately but isn’t overly large as that may become a tripping hazard.
  • Drainage: If you’re purchasing a non-slip mat that’s likely to continually get wet, you want a model that’s designed with drainage holes. This will prevent water from pooling and extend the life of your mat to boot!
  • Color: Sure, color is certainly a personal preference. Some people like a bold shade while others want a mat that seamlessly blends into their surroundings. While there is clearly no right or wrong, it’s important to keep in mind that a mat whose color contrasts with the floor will be easier to see. If you’re in a shower or even just the bathroom, having an edge that’s visible may help you avoid slips and scrapes.

Tips for Non-Slip Mats

Here are a few insider tips for keeping your mat in good shape and getting the most bang for your buck:

  • Tea tree oil: An essential oil well known for its antiseptic, antimicrobial and antibacterial properties, tea tree oil is also a fungicide that will help prevent mildew and mold. Therefore, I highly recommend getting a bottle and applying some to your mat after every cleaning.
  • Position first: When it comes to mats for your shower or tub, you’ll want to make sure you position and firmly place it on the floor before turning on the water. If you turn on the water first, you run the risk of the mat not properly adhering to the floor.
  • Repurpose: Thanks to inevitable wear and tear, all mats will eventually need to be replaced. However, you don’t necessarily need to toss them out. They can easily be repurposed. You can use an older mat as a grip pad to open jars, to cover sharp corners, a place for muddy shoes and more!

Recap of the Best Non-Slip Mats

Purchasing a non-slip mat is truly a no-brainer. They reduce your risk of falling in the bathroom (among other rooms) and often provide a comfortable place to stand. As an added bonus, they can even supply a little boost of color or dramatic design flair. What’s not to love?

FAQs

How often should you wash your bath mat?

It’s best to wash your bath mat every three to four weeks. Spraying it weekly with white vinegar will also help kill bacteria.

How do I keep rugs in place?

If your rugs don’t have a non-slip coating on the back, you should consider buying a rug pad to place underneath the actual rug. You can also use rubber-coated shelf liner as an alternative.

Are bamboo bath mats any good?

Bamboo bath mats are made from a tough material and therefore incredibly durable, though they might not be as comfortable or soft as mats made from cotton.
