Table of Contents

If you’re worried about protecting your property at night, let us help you shed a little light on the situation. Outdoor security lights are a great way to provide a visual deterrent to potential intruders, while also adding to your own general convenience. I mean, how many times have you walked out onto your back porch and clumsily tripped on a deck chair?

Mostly motion-activated and sometimes solar-powered, outdoor security lights make a great low-cost security option because they don’t need to be tethered to a larger security system. Oftentimes they’re standalone units that you install once and let do their jobs. The trick is picking the right one for your needs; which is what we’re here to do.

Suntoll Solar Outdoor Security Lights

Featuring 80 LED bulbs per light, this two-light pack provides best-in-class illumination at its price point. With easy installation, no-fuss solar power, and advanced passive infrared (PIR) motion activation, these lights are the best choice for versatile outdoor security lighting.

Pros: With a 270-degree wide angle field of view, these lights can pick up on motion like no other. Their intense 80 LEDs per light make them some of the brightest in their class, and because they balance sleekness with size, they don’t sacrifice longevity. These lights are tested to last with a more than 30,000-hour lifespan.

Cons: The downside to these lights is there is no adjustable light positioning; you’re sort of stuck on a coverage area once they’re set in place.

Baxia BX-SL-101 Solar Outdoor Security Lights

Unlike other outdoor security lights that focus one high beam on a specific area, the versatility of a four-pronged approach makes this kit a great option for covering multiple access points on a property. Easily installed and solar powered, these little lights spring to action on motion.

Pros: The main draw here is the option of positioning four different, 400-lumen lights in various parts of your property. With a waterproof design and an extreme ease of installation, these lights are a great motion-activated way to be alerted to any intruders. They also feature on-off switches so you can deactivate them if you’re having a backyard BBQ and don’t want lights going off every ten seconds.

Cons: Because you’re dealing with small solar panels, there are potential issues with the longevity of the lights; some have quit a few weeks after heavy use.

Best Garden Outdoor Security Light

KeShi 360-Degree Solar Outdoor Security Light

The KeShi 360-Degree Security Light is a great set-it-and-forget it option for anyone looking to shed a little extra light on an outdoor area like a garden or lawn. With two independent, adjustable floodlights, you’re able to position them just so to cover the most ground possible, which is great to keep intruders, both animal and human, off your property.

Pros: The device runs on solar power, which right away eliminates a major hassle in installation. Yet even though it’s powered by the sun, it still manages a strong dual beam of light. This outdoor security light has an IP rating of 65, meaning it’s waterproof, so you won’t have to worry about it in inclement weather.

Cons: While the installation was super simple, we found the included setup tools and instructions a little bit difficult to use.

Best Outdoor Security Light With Camera

Ring Floodlight Camera

Part of Amazon’s Ring home security and smart home line, this full-featured device not only houses a high-definition security camera that seamlessly pairs with your phone, but also features ultra-bright floodlights that show burglars you mean business. It’s all part of the larger Ring Alarm security system, which is one of my personal favorites.

Pros: You’re really getting the best of both worlds here: a 1080p HD security camera that streams video to your phone, as well as an 1800-lumen dual floodlight. This top-of-the-line device springs to action the moment motion is detected, and features a wide 180-degree field of view. You’ll be able to see clearly at night either through the spotlight in color night vision, or in black and white from the infrared sensors.

Cons: Unlike other outdoor security lights, this device is not a standalone unit; rather, it requires hard wiring, and needs WiFi access to transmit video, unless you buy cellular backup from a Ring Protect plan.

Best Outdoor Security Light for Your Porch

Torchstar Dusk-to-Dawn Floodlight

This floodlight from Torchstar is a perfect replacement for a standard wired porch light. With a built-in photocell, this light runs automatically from dusk to dawn, illuminating your porch (or barn) from potential security threats.

Pros: Featuring a 35W low-consumption light source, this floodlight is incredibly energy efficient. It’s also durable enough to withstand water, dust, and heat, and its high-quality aluminum body feels sturdy once it’s in place. The main feature here is its automatic dusk-to-dawn operation, however; simply set it and forget it.

Cons: While this light performs all of its functions well, it’s not a customizable option; for example the internal bulb isn’t replaceable and the dusk-to-dawn feature can’t be switched off.

Outdoor Security Light Methodology

Best Outdoor Security Lights Review
Shine a light on your outdoor security.

Most outdoor security lights have the same basic elements, but the best ones provide a winning combination of everything. Here’s what we looked for in determining the best outdoor security lights.

  • Brightness: It should go without saying that for a security light to be viable, they should offer enough illumination to cover the area you’re intending them to cover. While lower lumen levels were adequate for a smaller area like a porch, we looked for larger illumination counts for higher-level security applications.
  • Ease of Installation: Part of what goes into ease of installation is solar powered or wired. We tended to favor solar powered lights because they could be installed in more remote parts of a property.
  • Motion Activation Sensitivity: Most outdoor security cameras work on motion activation. The best ones not only included a wide field of view that could detect objects across a wide area, but also had PIR sensitivity high enough to pick up on objects smaller than humans.

Outdoor Security Light Tips

Choosing an outdoor security light will largely depend on your property size, the areas you need to protect most, and whether you have other security systems in place. Generally speaking, however, there are some high-level considerations to make.

  • Wired or wireless: When you’re shopping for lights, take special note to see if the lights you’re looking at require wired power. If they do, you’ll need access to an exterior electrical box.
  • Weatherproof: Take into consideration the build material and whether the security light is IP rated of 65 or higher. This means that the light is both dust-proof and can handle low-pressure jet streams.
