Safety Vest Methodology

So what exactly do I look for in a safety vest? Listen up:

  • Color: Most safety vests come in yellow or orange, but I’ve seen them in every color of the rainbow. When it comes to safety vest color, the general rule is the brighter the better.
  • Size: I prefer safety vests that come in a variety of sizes, from small to 5XL, although this is clearly a personal choice based on your body type and size.
  • Material: All of the safety vests that I’ve reviewed are polyester.
  • Pockets: Again, this may be a personal preference, but I give safety vests extra points if they have pockets, and double extra if the pockets are of various sizes.
  • Reflective strips: All of the vests I’ve reviewed come with two-inch reflective strips on the front and the back to increase visibility, an essential feature of a safety vest.
  • Enclosure type: Again, there doesn’t tend to be a huge variation between safety vests, which are typically enclosed by zippers.
  • ANSI/ INSEA compliance: I want to make sure that any safety vest I recommend complies with ANSI, the American National Standards Institute.
  • Weight: I prefer safety vests that weigh around five ounces, but I’ve seen some that weigh over 10.

Safety Vest Tips

Here are some best practices for shopping for, wearing and caring for a safety vest:

  • Read cleaning instructions: Safety vests are not like the rest of your street clothing, so make sure to read it’s cleaning instructions and don’t just throw it in the washer with everything else.
  • Flammability: Depending on what activity you’re using the safety vest for, you might want to get one that’s flame retardant or even fireproof.
  • Material: While polyester is a good fabric for most situations, you might want to wear a mesh vest for warmer days.
