Ah, the humble security cable. It’s one of those things that you don’t think about until you need one, yet it could mean a difference of hundreds or thousands of dollars in stolen property if it turns out to be unreliable.

With relatively minor variance in the fundamental structure of security cables, it’s easy to think you should just buy the cheapest one. However, when you dig a little deeper into all the security cables on the market, you’ll find that they’re not created equal. From differences in length and weight to flexibility and strength, different cables work better for different applications. In this guide we’ll look at some of the best that the category has to offer, and help you choose the right one for your needs.

Kryptonite KryptoFlex Security Cable

Kryptonite is the industry leader in locks and cables for a reason, and their KryptoFlex Security Cable is no exception. This seven foot steel threaded cable doesn’t baffle with thickness or excess weight; instead, it offers the thinnest vinyl coating to eliminate rust and rub, while maximizing flexibility and portability.

Pros: This lightweight cable is long enough to lock up multiple bikes, and its flexibility makes it easy to coil up and carry in a bag. Pair it with a Kryptonite lock for the ultimate security combo. It’s also a great value at its price point.

Cons: With its thinner design, the KryptoFlex isn’t as imposing as its competitors, which means it doesn’t act quite as effectively as a visual deterrent. It’s also susceptible to some cable cutters, which is no surprise for cables in this category (no cable is perfect!).

Lumintrail Heavy Duty Security Cable

If you’re in need of a reliable security cable, look no further than the seven foot heavy duty Lumintrail cable. With a thick 1/2 in. band and large loops, this cable can be paired with any lock to create a strong security measure.

Pros: Not too long and not too short, seven feet is ideal for locking down everything from bikes to grills. And, its large loops can easily accommodate whatever lock you choose.

Cons: While the thickness of the lock inspires a lot of confidence and provides a great visual deterrent to would-be thieves, we found that the actual interior steel cable is a bit thinner, and is masked by a heavy vinyl layer.

Best Security Cable for Large Objects

Schlage Flexible Steel Security Cable

Measuring out at a full 30 feet, this heavy-duty steel cable from lock industry leaders Schlage is the go-to pick for securing large objects

Pros: While this cable doesn’t do anything revolutionary, its ample length is the real sell. 30 feet of secure cable can be used to guard a multitude of large items, and its protective coating means you can set it and forget it without worrying about rusting. And, with its vinyl cover, it won’t rust or scrape the exterior of the objects its rubbing against. It’s also a great value at its length.

Cons: Though the cable is strong enough for the majority of applications, especially in lower-security situations, we’ve found it to be slightly less durable than competitors, which makes it less than ideal for protecting high-risk assets.

Best Security Cable With Built-In Lock

Sporcis Bike Lock

This PVC-coated steel cable from Sporcis is designed for bikes, but makes a great all-purpose cable for any smaller items you need to lock down. We could see this lock being a great asset for protecting property on a college campus.

Pros: Not only does this cable have a built-in lock, but it also features a push-button LED for navigating the lock in the dark. It’s coiled style also makes it perfect for portability. Its built-in four-digit locking mechanism makes peripheral locks unnecessary add-ons.

Cons: Though the coil style is great, it does limit the stretch of the cable. At its max, this cable can only stretch 4 ft. which, while great for securing smaller valuables, might be a little too short for anything bigger than a bike.

Best Security Cable for Bikes

BV 15FT Steel Security Cable

This 15 foot security cable from BV is more than long enough to encapsulate every part of your bike, both tires and frame. And though we recommend pairing the cable with a dedicated bike lock, the included U-shackle lock is a sweet something extra.

Pros: What sets this lock apart is it’s extra internal steel thread. While most comparable locks contain six braided steel cables and one plastic thread, this BV lock has a full seven steel cable threads for added security.

Cons: With the added security of the seventh thread, and the extended length comes added weight. Some cyclists may find the 2 pound cable (with lock) a little cumbersome for everyday commutes.

Security Cable Methodology

best security cables review
From bikes to heavy machinery, security cables are essential for property protection

Selecting a security cable is by and large a situation-dependent endeavor. Are you looking to lock up a bike and carry the cable with you on an everyday commute? Is this cable getting wrapped around a combine harvester and being left in a barn for the winter? Yet whatever the application happens to be, there are some baseline qualities that set certain cables apart. In compiling our list we considered:

  • Length: Looking at length, there is kind of a perfect ground from seven to 15 feet. 30 feet of cable is great for securing large objects, and two feet is fine for locking the handle of a grill to a fence, but the seven to fifteen foot range tended to be the best for locking up both tires and the frame of a bike while also having a little slack left over to secure it to a bike rack.
  • Weight: Cables are already the lighter option compared to heavier chains, yet thick cables can still weigh in at a couple pounds. When looking at cables we put emphasis on those with some lightness that would be a better selection for bike commuters.
  • Built-in lock: Featuring a built-in lock is great if you’re looking to secure something slightly more low-priority. But generally, they provide decreased overall security and make up for it with convenience. In our assessment, we tended to favor cables that could be paired with stronger locks to maximize security.
  • Build material: The standard build material for security cables is some kind of threaded steel internal cable covered with a weatherproof vinyl cover. This combination is a solid industry standard for a reason.

Security Cable Tips

What specifics should you look for when selecting a security cable? Obviously your needs will dictate the length and weight, but generally speaking there are a couple hallmarks to look for:

  • Weatherproof: Chances are any cable you’re going to choose will need to be exposed to the elements at some point. Make sure there’s a vinyl cover protecting the internal materials so you’re not replacing the cable after a year or two due to rust.
  • Honesty in cable thickness: Some cables will advertise a thickness of cable but are describing the overall cable and not the steel within. Do a little digging to determine the thickness of the internal steel component to measure the overall security of the cable.
