The Best Security Signs of 2019

Table of Contents

Put yourself in the shoes of a would-be burglar. You’re driving around, deciding which house to hit, when you see a security sign. Sure, the house may just have the sign up, but how can you really know, and why would you choose a house with a sign when there’s tons without signs all over the street? Whether you don’t have a security system or you want to advertise that you do, security signs are an easy and cost-effective way to prevent burglaries from happening in the first place. Additionally, as potential burglars become more sophisticated, you may want to have a separate security sign to make it unclear which system you are actually using. These options from top companies like SimpliSafe, ADT and Brinks will have burglars thinking twice. Let’s get started.

So you want people to think your home is secure, but you’re not ready to pay for a whole security system. Meet the First Alert Yard Sign, an 18-inch sign that will make people think twice about robbing your home.

Pros: I love that this sign is made from PVC, as it will endure rain or shine. This package includes one sign and four stickers for a really reasonable price. Finally, it includes the stake, which is not always the case for security signs as you’ll see.

Cons: Even though the stake is included, it’s made of plastic and a little bit flimsy

ADT Security Signs and Stickers

ADT Security Signs and Stickers

ADT is the oldest security company in the United States with over 140 in business, probably the most famous of all the companies. This package of two signs and six stickers may be a little pricey, but you’re paying for prestige.

Pros: Like I said, ADT probably has the best name recognition of any security brand, which is really important if you’re displaying it in front of your home. The sign itself comes with a stake, which is a rarity with security signs. Plus, ADT requires all of its customers to pay for 24/7 professional monitoring and cellular backup, so it’s unlikely burglars will choose your house with their sign displayed.

Cons: This is by far the most expensive sign and stickers I’ve ever reviewed, although it’s obviously still much cheaper than buying an actual security system.

If you are knowledgeable about the smart home security market, then you’ve definitely heard of SimpliSafe. Founded in 2006 by two Harvard Business school students, the company has become one of the most respected around, so a sign from them is a simple way to say that your home is secure (even if it isn’t).

Pros: Made from PVC, this sign can weather all four seasons. It’s cheap, light at only 2.72 ounces, and even comes with double sided tape. Plus, most SimpliSafe users have 24/7 professional monitoring and cellular backup, which will definitely make burglars think twice about breaking and entering into your house.

Cons: Like many of the signs on this list, this one from SimpliSafe doesn’t come with a stake. Rats!

Sure, it’s just a sign and not an actual security system. But a sign and stickers from Brinks means that you could have 24/7 professional monitoring, cellular backup, and tons of IoT products from video doorbells to glass break detectors.

Pros: Brinks is a recognizable name in home security, so it’ll work to deter burglars from choosing your house in the first place. The sign is made of PVC, which is pretty weather-resistant. I also appreciate the fact that they drilled holes in it for easy installation!

Cons: Unfortunately, Brinks didn’t include a stake with their sign, so you’ll have to get that elsewhere.

If you’re really looking to save money and keep your home secure at the same time, then throwing up a generic security sign is a simple solution to confuse robbers. This aluminum option from Sigo Signs is rust free, so it’ll last through all the seasons no matter where you live.

Pros: As the sign isn’t for a specific company in particular, it’ll leave burglars with absolutely no intel about your security system, other than the fact that you have one. Being made of aluminum, it has a long outdoor life and is resistant to chemicals. Plus, the holes are pre-drilled so you can easily put it up.

Cons: This Sigo Sign does not come with a stake, so you’re going to have to purchase that separately.

Security Sign Methodology

Sure, signs may seem like they’re pretty self-explanatory, but there’s actually a few factors to consider when buying a security sign:

  • Company: Burglars may be familiar with certain security companies, so it’s important to use a sign from a reputable one. If you’re not familiar, check out my review of the best home security systems of 2019 for some ideas on top companies.
  • Material: Most signs are made of a weather-resistant PVC, although I am also okay with rust-free aluminum. Just make sure your sign is durable or at least, durable enough for the climate you’re in.
  • Stake: Unfortunately, most security signs don’t come with a stake, so extra points when they do.
  • Size: You want something that people can see whether they’re walking or driving by, so make sure your sign is big and bright enough to get noticed!
  • Pre-drilled holes: I prefer security signs with pre-drilled holes, making for easy installation.

Security Sign Tips

Installing a security sign is pretty simple, but here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Local, state and federal laws: Different municipalities have different rules about where you can place signs and what signs can be placed where, for example, advertisements may not be displayed within certain distances of public parks, state forests, etc. Be sure to check the law before installing your sign!
  • DIY stake: As many of the security signs on this list don’t come with stakes, you can make your own out of wood with only a few simple materials! Don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty.
  • Weather resistance: Depending on your climate, you want to make sure your sign won’t fall down due to wind, rain, or snow, so make sure it’s in a material appropriate for where you live.

Recap of the Best Security Signs of 2019

Now, just because you have a security sign in front of your home does not by any means mean that you are protected. Of course, I always recommend getting a home security system, but if you are trying to save money, you might want to check out the best home self-monitored security systems to avoid paying monthly or yearly fees. At the very least, installing a security camera is always helpful, especially if it’s on our list of the best home security cameras of 2019!
