Ring Spotlight Cam Battery With Light On

Ring Spotlight Cam Battery

If you’re looking for a security camera and a spotlight rolled into one, then look no further than the Ring Spotlight Cam Battery. With infrared night vision, you’ll be able to see super clearly at night, which is the time when most burglaries typically occur.

Pros: You’ll be able not only to control the light remotely, but also to livestream footage from the camera 24/7 through the Ring— Always Home app. Ring also offers 24/7 professional monitoring and cellular backup for low monthly or yearly fees, ensuring your home is always protected, even during a power outage. Plus, the camera’s built-in 110 decibel siren, about as loud as a rock band or jackhammer, will ensure that if someone’s on your property while the system is armed, you’ll know about it.

Cons: As this spotlight also includes a security camera, it’s much more expensive than getting a spotlight alone.

DrawGreen Outdoor Spotlight

Out of all the security spotlights that I’ve reviewed, the DrawGreen Outdoor Spotlight has the longest range. It’ll work for 45 to 60 feet, plus, it can rotate 360 degrees around, giving you the most coverage for your front or back yard.

Pros: I love that the DrawGreen Outdoor Spotlight can be charged by the sun, or by a replaceable battery. Either way, you won’t have to worry about any fussy wires, ideal for an outdoor light. The spotlight also boasts infrared night vision, also useful for the outdoors. Plus, it’s motion-activated, lighting up when it senses motion from 20 to 26 feet away— color me impressed!

Cons: If it’s a rainy day without much sunlight, the spotlight can take as much as three days to recharge, so it might not be the best option for those in rainy or cloudy climates.

Best LED

Aootek Solar Outdoor Motion Sensor Lights

The sun is great for many things: tanning, staying warm, helping plants grow, etc. But it can also be a source of power, that is, if you get the Aootek Solar Outdoor Motion Sensor Lights.

Pros: If you don’t want to use the solar panel, then feel free to power the Aootek Solar Outdoor Motion Sensor Lights with a rechargeable battery. The lights have a 26-foot range and an IP rating of 65. That means that they’re completely protected from solids and can even withstand water jets while still functioning normally. With an 180 degree field of view, these lights have the most coverage possible.

Cons: I wish the Aootek Solar Outdoor Motion Sensor Lights were connected to an app so I could control them remotely.

Security Spotlight Methodology

Security Spotlight Methodology
Security Spotlight Methodology

So just how did I go about picking the best security spotlights of 2019, and what are some things to look out for when you’re shopping for a security spotlight? Ladies and gentlemen, here is what to look for:

  • Power: Your security spotlight may be battery-powered, solar-powered, or it may be hardwired into your home. Depending on where you want to place your spotlight, you should consider what kind of power source would be ideal.
  • Range: Your spotlight should have a range of at least 20 feet or more, again, depending on where you want to place it and what needs coverage.
  • Durability: For durability, I look at two measures: an object’s temperature range and it’s IP rating, a two digit number that measures how susceptible an object is to solids and liquids. The first number refers to solids, and the second number refers to liquids.
IP Ratings
  • App: Some spotlights are WiFi-connected so that you can control them with an app remotely, or even set them on schedules. If that’s the case, make sure that the app is highly-rated on either the Apple or Google Play store, depending on your mobile device.
  • Field of view: Your security spotlight should have a field of view of at least 120 degrees so you can get the most coverage, with the maximum being 180.
  • Brightness: Measured in lumens or watts, this is an important factor to consider, especially if you’re looking at outdoor lights.
  • Light type: The majority of security spotlights use energy-efficient LED bulbs, which I prefer over incandescent.

Security Spotlight Tips

Here are some best practices for using and installing security spotlights:

  • Motion test: Be sure to check out that the spotlight’s motion sensors work before you leave them be.
  • Backup: If possible, make sure that the spotlight isn’t completely dependent on your home’s power, as this could be an issue if you have a neighborhood blackout. Backup options include battery, landline or cellular. For more information, check out my article about what happens to your home’s security in the event of a power outage.
  • Security system: While security spotlights are great to use, they should be part of a larger security system. If you’re just starting out, here’s a great resource of 2019’s best home security systems
