Apple HomePod

Apple HomePod

Last but not least is the Apple HomePod, a smart speaker from Apple that retails for $299. Now, I’m going to be honest with you: this is definitely at the higher end for smart speakers, which is pretty typical of the always pricey Apple. But if you want to get into the Apple smart home ecosystem and use Siri with your connected devices, this is the device for you. Available in space gray or white, the speaker boasts automatic bass correction with six microphones for clear listening.

Of course, the key feature of the Apple HomePod is that it gives you access to the voice assistant Siri, who you might recognize from your iPhone. Using your voice alone, you can tell Siri to play music from Apple Music or podcasts from Apple Podcasts. That’s perfect for me, as I can’t go more than a few hours without catching up on my favorite podcasts. Plus, this speaker allows me to control a ton of other smart home products, from the Netatmo Indoor camera to my Philips Hue light bulbs.

Google Home Mini

Whether you’re just getting started off with your smart home or need a speaker for another room, the Google Home Mini is a fantastic option. For only $49, you can get access to the Google Assistant, a voice assistant with over 4,235 actions. Just say “Hey Google” to shop on Google Express, listen to Spotify, or get a recipe read to you, step by step.

Of course, this speaker is only a speaker, so you won’t be able to video chat or watch movies and TV shows, but it’s a great option for a room that already has a screen. Available in chalk, charcoal, coral, or aqua, the Google Home Mini measures only 3.86 across and is only 1.65 inches in height, so it won’t take up too much room. Don’t mistake it’s size for a lack of volume, though; music will sound great through the Google Home Mini’s two microphones.

Google WiFi Mesh

Google Wi-Fi Mesh

Google WiFi Mesh

Perhaps the basis of any smart home (or any home in the 21st century, really) is WiFi, which allows us to connect to the Internet of the first place. But, as anyone knows, WiFi can bring a lot of problems with it, particularly dead zones if you’re working with a traditional router. Instead, I use Google’s current solution, the Google WiFi Mesh. Rather than using a single router, this network sets up multiple points throughout my home to make sure that my network is fast and everywhere. I love that Google automatically connects me with the nearest WiFi point, as well as the least congested one to avoid lag.

But what really puts me over the edge is the total and utter lack of wires. We’ve all done the tightrope walk over a sea of tangled wires, so this is a huge relief. Plus, one three pack covers over 4,500 square feet, which is more than enough for me in my tiny New York apartment. I actually only needed a single Wifi point, as my home is under 1,500 square feet. That cost me $129, a price I’ll gladly pay for faster Internet.

Amazon Echo Show 5

Amazon Echo Show 5

Amazon Echo Show 5

For an astoundingly low price of $89.99, the Amazon Echo Show 5 is the latest Amazon has to offer in smart home devices. If you’re just getting started in your smart home, this is a great place to begin. The device itself includes a 5.5 inch screen, plus a speaker and a microphone for video chatting through Skype. Of course, there are literally thousands of things you can do with your Amazon Echo Show 5, from watching TV on Prime to listening to music on Amazon Music, from cooking a meal to ordering food from Seamless, if you’re feeling lazy.

Now, in contrast to previous models, the Amazon Echo Show 5 has a built-in shutter allowing you to cover your camera, if privacy is a concern. You’ll also be able to turn off the device’s microphone and camera completely, which should give you some piece of mind. That’s awesome, because the last thing I want to do is miss out on Alexa’s 50,000 skills and counting.

Keeping track of your weight can be a slog, that is, if you don’t use the eufy Smart Scale. With connection to the eufy app, you’ll be able to easily track your weight over time and connect it to either Google Fit or Apple Health, storing all of your health data in one convenient location.

Along with weight, this scale from eufy can measure muscle mass, your body’s percentage of water, as well as your total percentage of body fat, all displayed on an LED screen as well as your eufy app. You’ll also be able to check your BMI, bone density, lean body mass, body fat mass, and more. With the eufy Smart Scale, it’s easy to keep track of how my body is doing from anywhere in the world.

Nest Protect Smoke and CO Detector

Nest Protect

Nest Protect Smoke and CO Detector

If you’ve read any of my reviews before, then you know that I’m pretty obsessed with home security, but safety isn’t all about preventing break-ins. It’s also about making sure that the air is safe to breathe with healthy levels of oxygen. Nest Protect will let you know if it finds dangerous smoke or CO levels whether you’re at home or on a business trip in another state, all through the Nest app

If dangerous air quality is detected, Nest Protect will let you know in more ways than just a mobile notification. It’ll also sound an 85 decibel siren, about as loud as a snow blower, plus it’ll give voice alerts as well as color-coded light alerts. If it’s a false alarm, you’ll be able to silence Nest Protect from your phone with no hassle. But my favorite fact about Nest Protect is that it tests itself over 400 times a day to make sure it’s connected with the Nest app and good on battery, so you can rest assured that it will work the way it’s supposed to. Did I mention it’s integrations with LIFX, Philips Hue, SkyBell, Logitech Harmony, Wink, Nexia, abode, and more?

Amazon Smart Plug

Got a device that you want to be able to control remotely and through voice commands? No problem. The Amazon Smart Plug allows you to control any electronic device up to 15A from anywhere in the world using the Alexa app, highly-rated by iPhone and Android users alike.

Requiring only a Wi-Fi connection, the Amazon Smart Plug lets you put your devices on schedules, group them into scenes, and even use away mode to have them turn off and on periodically when your’e out of the house. For example, I like to plug my old lamps in with Amazon Smart Plugs so I can make it seem like I’m home when I’m not. It’s also ideal if you’re worried you left the iron on, to give an example. Plus, the Amazon Smart Plug won’t block other sockets, which is a godsend when you have as many devices as I do.

Philips Hue White and Color Smart Bulb

Whether you’re in the Amazon, Google or Apple smart home ecosystems, the Philips Hue White and Color Smart Bulb is an extremely solid choice, working with the voice assistants of all the aforementioned companies. It also works with Nest products, SmartThings products, and Wink products, making for some awesome home automation possibilities.

So not only does the Philips Hue White and Color Smart Bulb have over 16 million different colors you can choose from, but it’s also dimmable, allowing you total control over your lighting. You’ll be able to set schedules for your lights as well as group them into scenes for easy access (i.e a reading scene, a dancing scene and a workout scene, for example). You can even sync up the Philips Hue White and Color Smart Bulb with the sunrise and sunset to start and end your day right.

Wyze Cam V2

Wyze Cam and Box

Wyze Cam V2

It’s rare that a security camera hits all of Security Baron’s Necessary Features, but the Wyze Cam V2 is anything but typical. For only $20, a fraction of the cost of it’s competitors, the Wyze Cam V2 offers person detection, integrations with Alexa, Google Assistant, and IFTTT, local storage and 14 days of cloud storage on the house, awesome infrared night vision, two-way audio, plus 1080p HD video. You’ll be able to zoom in eight times to capture those great details. Plus, you’ll be alerted whenever the camera detects a person through the Wyze app.

The Wyze Cam V2 is plug-in, meaning you’ll never have to worry about changing the batteries, and is intended for indoor use. On top of that, it can also turn your existing smoke and CO alarms into smart devices with smart sound recognition, so you can receive a mobile notification if your alarms go off! All in all, this camera is one of my favorites which is why I consider it to be one of the best home security cameras of 2019.

Their Basic Security System is anything but, with a control panel, sensors, a Kwikset smart lock, the Vivint Doorbell Camera, smoke and CO alarms, plus an indoor camera. I also added theVivint Doorbell Camera , which offers a waterproof design, infrared night vision, person detection, plus integrations with Alexa and Google Assistant.
