Maryland’s
Safest Cities

2019

Named for Queen Mary of England, Maryland is known for the Ravens football team, named after Edgar Allan Poe’s famous poem, jousting, the state’s official sport, and Baltimore, its largest city. Referred to as “American in Miniature”, its climates range from mountains to farmland, from beaches to sand dunes. Celebrities like Lewis Black, David Hasselhoff, and Frank Zappa are Maryland natives. Plus, it’s one of two states to give up some of its land to form Washington, D.C along with Delaware. Want to go sailing? Head on over to Annapolis, the Sailing Capital of the World with over four million visitors every single year. And while you’re out there, make sure you have some blue crabs and soft clams doused in Old Bay or Chesapeake Bay seasonings— it’s a Maryland tradition!

If you’re in Maryland, there’s a few things you absolutely must do, like:

  • National Aquarium- Located in Baltimore, this iconic building offers a dolphin show, a shark tank, amazing exhibits of marine life and even a rainforest you can walk through!
  • Great Falls- For those fans of outdoor activities, visit this series of waterfalls and rapids on the Potomac River. It’s only 14 miles from D.C, on the border of Maryland and Virginia.
  • Oriole Park at Camden Yards- For all those baseball fans out there, you have to make it to Baltimore’s Major League Baseball park, first opened in 1992.

Now, maybe you’ve come to this page because you’re moving to Maryland, or maybe you’re just visiting. Either way, it’s a good thing you’re about to learn about the state’s safest cities. Our first pick is Ocean Pines, a city on the eastern shore of Maryland. With a population of over 12,000 people, there was only 1.71 violent crimes per 1,000 people and only 6.69 property crimes for the same population! Other top picks include Thurmont, Taneytown, and Glenarden.

How Did We Determine the Safest Cities?

Of course, this isn’t just the safest cities according to personal opinion. Rather, we used the FBI’s 2017 and 2016 Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) data to choose our top picks, based on factors like:

  • Murder rate
  • Rape rate
  • Robbery Rate
  • Assault rate
  • Burglary rate
  • Theft rate
  • Vehicle theft rate
  • Arson rates
  • Median Income

For each city, we’ll provide the most important information that you need to know, such as the city’s population, violent and property crime rates and trends, median income, average household income, and an overall safety score and ranking. Plus, we’ll show you all the specific numbers for the above rates, in addition to larceny theft rates and the total number of civilians working in law offices.
