Michigan’s
50 Safest Cities

2019

Located in the Northern part of the United States, Michigan has major cities like Detroit, Warren, Grand Rapids, Ann Arbor, Sterling Heights, and of course, who could forget its capital, Lansing. The state has a variety of key industries, from agriculture of cherries, blueberries, soybean, corn, and milk, specifically, to automobile manufacturing. That’s why Detroit got the nickname Motor City! The state is also known for its plethora of lakes. In fact, the word Michigan itself comes from an Algonquian Native American word meaning “big water”, extremely fitting. For all the summer fun you can imagine, there’s Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Erie, Grand River, St. Marys River, Detroit River, and last but not least, Lake St. Clair. It’s no wonder that Michigan has the highest boater registration of any of the 50 states!

If you’re visiting or moving to Michigan, you simply must check out:

  • Mackinac Island: In Lake Huron between Michigan’s upper and lower peninsulas, this state park offers hiking and climbing via the Arch Rock formation.
  • Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore: Go to the beach, build a sandcastle, camp and hike in this huge lakeside park.
  • The Henry Ford Museum: This museum doesn’t only cover Henry Ford, but many parts of the United States history, from civil rights to the assassination of JFK.

No matter where you go, it’s important to stay safe and secure. The safest city in Michigan is Iron Mountain, a city in the Upper Peninsula. With a little over 7,000 people, there were less than one violent crimes and property crimes per 1,000 people, making it a super safe place to be! While you’re there, make sure to check out the Pine Mountain Resort for some skiing and some dipping in the pool.

4.5

This statistic shows the number of violent crimes per 1,000 people in the past year. Violent crimes include forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, as defined by the FBI.

1.965
This statistic shows how many motor vehicles were stolen per 1,000 of the city’s inhabitants. Across the United States, the rate was 238.8 per every 100,000 inhabitants, according to the FBI.
18

Finally, this number shows how many property crimes were committed in the past year per every 1,000 of the city’s residents. Property crimes include burglary, motor vehicle theft, arson and larceny-theft.

How Did We Determine the Safest Cities?

Of course, this isn’t just the safest cities according to personal opinion. Rather, we used the FBI’s 2017 and 2016 Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) data to choose our top picks, based on factors like:

  • Murder rate
  • Rape rate
  • Robbery Rate
  • Assault rate
  • Burglary rate
  • Theft rate
  • Vehicle theft rate
  • Arson rates
  • Median Income

For each city, we’ll provide the most important information that you need to know, such as the city’s population, violent and property crime rates and trends, median income, average household income, and an overall safety score and ranking. Plus, we’ll show you all the specific numbers for the above rates, in addition to larceny theft rates and the total number of civilians working in law offices.
