Minnesota’s
50 Safest Cities

2019

Located in the Northern United States, Minnesota has a population of 5.3 million living in cities from Minneapolis to Rochester to Duluth to Bloomington. Its key industries include agriculture (think beets, turkeys, peas, and corn) plus tourism, paper products, food processing, biomedical, and more. The state is also known for its bodies of water, including Lake Superior, Rainy Lake, Lower Red Lake, the Mississippi River, and the Minnesota River. There are so many bodies of water that the word Minnesota itself comes from a Sioux Native American word meaning “sky water”. Whether you’re biking around Minneapolis or one of the state’s beautiful national parks, there are tons of things to do in Minneapolis that you can’t find anywhere else.

What are some things that you can’t miss while in Minnesota? Well, for starters:

  • Mall of America: The largest mall in the United States, the Mall of America is as large as 78 football fields and includes shopping, dining, movies, an aquarium, and even a theme park!
  • Voyageurs National Park: For a more outdoorsy activity, head on over to swim in the lake, hike on the trails, or experience a guided tour.
  • Minneapolis Institute of Art: With art and artifacts from 5,000 year span, you can see everything from paintings by Monet to ancient Egyptian mummies.

Whatever brings you to Minnesota, you’re in the right place. We’ve researched the state’s safest cities, and number one is Big Lake, a city in Sherburne County. With a population of nearly 11,000, the town has less than .1 violent crimes per 1,000 people and only 5.5 property crimes for the same number (and both are on the decline from the previous year!).

2.383

This statistic shows the number of violent crimes per 1,000 people in the past year. Violent crimes include forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, as defined by the FBI.

1.789
This statistic shows how many motor vehicles were stolen per 1,000 of the city’s inhabitants. Across the United States, the rate was 238.8 per every 100,000 inhabitants, according to the FBI.
21.915

Finally, this number shows how many property crimes were committed in the past year per every 1,000 of the city’s residents. Property crimes include burglary, motor vehicle theft, arson and larceny-theft.

How Did We Determine the Safest Cities?

Of course, this isn’t just the safest cities according to personal opinion. Rather, we used the FBI’s 2017 and 2016 Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) data to choose our top picks, based on factors like:

  • Murder rate
  • Rape rate
  • Robbery Rate
  • Assault rate
  • Burglary rate
  • Theft rate
  • Vehicle theft rate
  • Arson rates
  • Median Income

For each city, we’ll provide the most important information that you need to know, such as the city’s population, violent and property crime rates and trends, median income, average household income, and an overall safety score and ranking. Plus, we’ll show you all the specific numbers for the above rates, in addition to larceny theft rates and the total number of civilians working in law offices.
