There’s no state that’s more fun to spell other than Mississippi. Located in the Deep South, Mississippi has many cities including Jackson, its capital, plus Gulfport, Biloxi, Southaven, and Hattiesburg. The word Mississippi itself comes from an Algonquin Native American word meaning “great river,” referring of course to the famed Mississippi River. Among its most famous people include Jimmy Buffett, Faith Hill, B.B King, and Elvis Presley, making the state a bastion of music! In fact, you can still visit The King’s birthplace in Tupelo. Aside from its celebrities, Mississippi is known for its many bodies of water, including the aforementioned Mississippi River, Yazoo River, the Gulf of Mexico, Grenada Lake, and more.
What to do while in Mississippi? Well, a ton, but to name a few:
- Vicksburg National Military Park: A battleground in the Civil War, this museum educates people on the Vicksburg Campaign.
- Ship Island: An island off the coast of the state in the Gulf of Mexico, this is a great place not only to swim, but also to learn more about the Civil War.
- Beau Rivage Resort and Casino: For those that like to gamble, make sure to check out this waterfront casino which includes a hotel, poo, spa, bars, and restaurants.
No matter where you go in Mississippi, you should probably learn a thing or two about its safest cities. Number one is Petal, a city right along the Leaf River in Forrest County. According to FBI statistics, the city had no violent crimes and only 8.38 property crimes per 1,000 people! Other top choices include Madison, Brandon, and Byram.
This statistic shows the number of violent crimes per 1,000 people in the past year. Violent crimes include forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, as defined by the FBI.
Finally, this number shows how many property crimes were committed in the past year per every 1,000 of the city’s residents. Property crimes include burglary, motor vehicle theft, arson and larceny-theft.
