50 Safest Cities
Located in the South, North Carolina offers a wide range of locations. If you’re more of a city person, you’ll love strolling through Raleigh, Charlotte, Durham, Greensboro, Fayetteville, or Winston-Salem, with Raleigh as the state’s capital. However, there’s also amazing nature to be seen, specifically the Rocky Mountains, the Albemarle Sound, the Cape Fear River, and more. And as far as firsts, North Carolina has a bunch of ‘em. It had the first successful flight of a mechanically powered airplane (maybe you’ve heard of the Wright brothers before), the first public university with the University of North Carolina, and even the first British child born in America in 1587 Roanoke. Plus, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts was founded in Winston-Salem, which I consider incredibly important to the state’s past— and delicious!
Of course, there are way too many things to name, but I wanted to point out a few things in North Carolina that you just can’t miss:
- Biltmore: The largest house in the United States, this chateau once owned by a Vandrbilt has 250 rooms and gorgeous gardens.
- Outer Banks: Located off the coast of NC, these islands are perfect for a beach day with your family, or for surfing on your own!
- Cape Hatteras Lighthouse: This 1870s lighthouse offers an amazing climb and an even better view!
But if you’re visiting or even moving to North Carolina, it’s important to make sure you are safe and secure. The safest city in North Carolina is Elon, which rests in Alamance County as part of the Burlington Metropolitan Statistical Area. Elan had literally no violent crimes and only 5.06 property crimes per 1,000 people, making it one of the safest places in the entire country. Other top picks include Pinehurst, Holly Springs, and Cary.
This statistic shows the number of violent crimes per 1,000 people in the past year. Violent crimes include forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, as defined by the FBI.
Finally, this number shows how many property crimes were committed in the past year per every 1,000 of the city’s residents. Property crimes include burglary, motor vehicle theft, arson and larceny-theft.
