Pennsylvania’s
50 Safest Cities

2019

Pennsylvania has a lot to offer, whether it’s their two biggest cities, Philadelphia or Pittsburgh, their amazing colleges like Pennsylvania State University, the University of Pennsylvania, Bryn Mawr College, or Haverford College, or their beautiful natural wonders like Wissahickon Creek and the Poconos Mountains. The word Pennsylvania itself means Penn’s Woods, named after its founder, William Penn. Of course, today Pennsylvania is a lot more than woods. Aside from Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, the state boasts many cities including Allentown, Bethlehem, Scranton (for you The Office fans out there), Erie, and Reading. Only two hours from New York City and three hours from Washington D.C, Pennsylvania is uniquely situated on the Eastern seaboard.

If you’re in Pennsylvania, make sure to check out these places:

  • Philadelphia Museum of Art: This beautiful, Renaissance-inspired building houses art by Van Gogh, Monet, and Duchamp, among other world-renowned artists.
  • Longwood Gardens: The creation of a member of the illustrious Dupont family, these gardens offers acres of gorgeous plants, greenhouses, and fountain shows, changed for every season.
  • Hershey Park: Located in known other than Hershey, Pennsylvania, this theme park has rides, live shows, and of course, all things chocolate.

Whether you’re moving to Pennsylvania or just visiting, it’s important to stay safe and secure. Pennsylvania’s safest city is Upper Yoder Township, part of Johnstown as well as Cambria County. With a population a little over 5,000, this township saw only .39 violent crimes and .97 property crimes per 1,000 people. If you do the math, that means that there were only about 2 violent crimes and about 4 property crimes in an entire year!

3.133

This statistic shows the number of violent crimes per 1,000 people in the past year. Violent crimes include forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, as defined by the FBI.

1.014
This statistic shows how many motor vehicles were stolen per 1,000 of the city’s inhabitants. Across the United States, the rate was 238.8 per every 100,000 inhabitants, according to the FBI.
16.494

Finally, this number shows how many property crimes were committed in the past year per every 1,000 of the city’s residents. Property crimes include burglary, motor vehicle theft, arson and larceny-theft.

How Did We Determine the Safest Cities?

Of course, this isn’t just the safest cities according to personal opinion. Rather, we used the FBI’s 2017 and 2016 Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) data to choose our top picks, based on factors like:

  • Murder rate
  • Rape rate
  • Robbery Rate
  • Assault rate
  • Burglary rate
  • Theft rate
  • Vehicle theft rate
  • Arson rates
  • Median Income

For each city, we’ll provide the most important information that you need to know, such as the city’s population, violent and property crime rates and trends, median income, average household income, and an overall safety score and ranking. Plus, we’ll show you all the specific numbers for the above rates, in addition to larceny theft rates and the total number of civilians working in law offices.

Find the Safest Cities in the following States
