South Carolina’s
Safest Cities

2019

With a slogan of “Smiling Faces. Beautiful Places,” South Carolina is a state that you don’t want to miss. Admitted to the United States in 1788 (the eighth state to do so), South Carolina is known for its juicy peaches, sweet tea, and don’t forget its state tree, the rubbery but lovable Palmetto. Spanning over 30,000 square miles, South Carolina reaches its highest point with Sassafras Mountain at 3,560 feet, located in Peckens County. Its bodies of water are plentiful, including the Atlantic Ocean, Lake Murray, Lake Moultrie, Lake Marion, the Saluda River and the Santee River. Just be careful in Lake Murray— it’s been plagued by rumors of a water monster for years now! While you’re in South Carolina, make sure to check out its beautiful beaches like Myrtle Beach and the Grand Strand. Another thing to watch out for? The Carolina Mantis, the state’s insect.

So if you’re in South Carolina, what are some things that you simply can’t afford to miss? Well, to name a few:

  • Broadway at the Beach: This outdoor shopping and entertainment center has live shows, shopping, dining, and other activities that your family will love.
  • Brookgreen Gardens: For those nature-lovers out there, explore beautiful botanical gardens with outdoor sculptures as well as wild animal exhibits.
  • Fort Sumter National Monument: History buffs will love learning about the start of the Civil War, accessed only by boat.

No matter where you go in South Carolina, you want to stay safe, especially if you’re with family or other loved ones. South Carolina’s safest city is Aiken, the state’s largest city located in the Augusta-Richmond County Metropolitan Statistical Area. Although the city has a relatively large population of 31,158 people, there were only 5.3 violent crimes and absolutely no property crimes for every 1,000 residents!

5.062

This statistic shows the number of violent crimes per 1,000 people in the past year. Violent crimes include forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, as defined by the FBI.

2.838
This statistic shows how many motor vehicles were stolen per 1,000 of the city’s inhabitants. Across the United States, the rate was 238.8 per every 100,000 inhabitants, according to the FBI.
31.959

Finally, this number shows how many property crimes were committed in the past year per every 1,000 of the city’s residents. Property crimes include burglary, motor vehicle theft, arson and larceny-theft.

How Did We Determine the Safest Cities?

Of course, this isn’t just the safest cities according to personal opinion. Rather, we used the FBI’s 2017 and 2016 Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) data to choose our top picks, based on factors like:

  • Murder rate
  • Rape rate
  • Robbery Rate
  • Assault rate
  • Burglary rate
  • Theft rate
  • Vehicle theft rate
  • Arson rates
  • Median Income

For each city, we’ll provide the most important information that you need to know, such as the city’s population, violent and property crime rates and trends, median income, average household income, and an overall safety score and ranking. Plus, we’ll show you all the specific numbers for the above rates, in addition to larceny theft rates and the total number of civilians working in law offices.
