Vermont’s
Safest Cities

2019

Located in northern New England, Vermont is an amalgamation of two French words that together mean green mountain, and it’s no surprise why. Its highest peak is Mt. Mansfield at over 4,000 feet high, while it also has beautiful bodies of water like the Connecticut River, Lake Champlain, and Lake Bomoseen. In over 9,000 square miles, Vermont has rural areas, towns, and cities like Burlington, Rutland, Essex, Colchester, South Burlington, and don’t forget its capital, Montpelier. The state’s main industries include agriculture, including delicious maple syrup, apples, and cattle, along with tourism, electronics, and paper. Plus, Vermont was the first state to join the United States after the first 13 colonies, the second smallest state according to population, and one of the first states to make slavery illegal. It’s perfect for a nature-loving introvert with an open mind, or anyone that appreciates a peaceful environment!

If you’re on this page, it might be because you’re moving to or visiting Vermont. Well, if you’re in the Green Mountain State, make sure you don’t miss:

  • Killington Ski Area: This beautiful mountain and resort is the perfect place to hit the slopes, and get hot cocoa in a ski lodge afterwards.
  • Mount Mansfield: If you feel like hiking or skiing, head on over to the highest peak in Vermont.
  • Hildene: This Georgian Revival mansion once used by the Lincoln family is now available for guided tours. Be sure to check out its lush gardens as well!

No matter where you go in Vermont, it’s important to stay safe. The safest city in Vermont is Swanton in Franklin County. With a population just over 6,500, Swanton only saw .92 violent and 2.76 property crimes per every 1,000 residents. With only 1,080 households, this seems like a great place to raise a family!

How Did We Determine the Safest Cities?

Of course, this isn’t just the safest cities according to personal opinion. Rather, we used the FBI’s 2017 and 2016 Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) data to choose our top picks, based on factors like:

  • Murder rate
  • Rape rate
  • Robbery Rate
  • Assault rate
  • Burglary rate
  • Theft rate
  • Vehicle theft rate
  • Arson rates
  • Median Income

For each city, we’ll provide the most important information that you need to know, such as the city’s population, violent and property crime rates and trends, median income, average household income, and an overall safety score and ranking. Plus, we’ll show you all the specific numbers for the above rates, in addition to larceny theft rates and the total number of civilians working in law offices.
