Country road, take me home! West Virginia is either the northern-most southern state or the southern-most northern state, depending on who you ask. It originally split off from Virginia during the Civil War. While West Virginia wanted to stay in the Union, Virginia wanted to join the Confederacy, and we all know who came out on top in that war! Nicknamed the Mountain State, West Virginia has tons of mountains, its highest being Spruce Knob at 4,863 feet. The state is also 75% forest, so it’s a good place to go if you want to get away for awhile. There are also a number of bodies of water including the Potomac River, Ohio River, Sutton Lake, and others. But my favorite fact about West Virginia is that it has one of the lowest crime rates in the United States, which is why you’re on this page in the first place!
Before I get to West Virginia’s safest cities, I want to tell you about some of the sights that you just can’t miss:
- Appalachian Trail Conservancy: The Appalachian Mountains, which span 14 states from Georgia to Maine, also runs through West Virginia, make the trip 2,180 miles overall.
- Summersville Lake: Camping, boating, and fishing are the name of the game in this reservoir lake with 60 miles of beautiful beaches.
- Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine: Since coal is still one of West Virginia’s major industries, you can actually tour a vintage mine underground and learn more about it.
Now let’s get back to safety. The safest city in West Virginia is Grafton in Taylor County. With a population just over 5,000, this city saw absolutely no violent crimes and only 1.56 property crimes for every 1,000 people! Other top picks include St. Albans, Weirton and Charles Town.
This statistic shows the number of violent crimes per 1,000 people in the past year. Violent crimes include forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, as defined by the FBI.
Finally, this number shows how many property crimes were committed in the past year per every 1,000 of the city’s residents. Property crimes include burglary, motor vehicle theft, arson and larceny-theft.
