Cartman Collapsible Traffic Cone

One of the most annoying things about owning a safety cone is storage— when you’re not using it, how can you store it? Luckily, the Cartman Collapsible Traffic Cone is collapsible, because I live in Brooklyn and space is hard to come by.

Pros: I like that the Cartman Collapsible Traffic Cone is available in packages of two, four, or 12, as that’ll make them even more affordable. As far as price goes, these cones go in at about 60% of the industry average. They also include reflective collars for nighttime visibility.

Cons: Although the Cartman Collapsible Traffic Cone are collapsible, they’re a bit difficult to collapse, but definitely doable.

REEHUT Traffic Cone

There are many uses for safety cones, from traffic to Capture The Flag. This traffic cone from REEHUT is a great and affordable option if you’re looking for a durable, plastic safety cone.

Pros: The REEHUT Traffic Cone is the only one I’ve reviewed to come in a variety of colors: orange, yellow, green and red, to be specific. It’s made out of LDPE, or Low Density Poly Ethylene, which makes it super strong in any kind of weather. Plus, if you don’t like your REEHUT Traffic Cone for whatever reason, you can return it for a full refund within 30 days of purchase, no questions asked.

Cons: The REEHUT Traffic Cone doesn’t have any reflective strips, so it’s probably better for sports games rather than traffic.

Best Orange

3M Non-Reflective Safety Cone

Orange isn’t typically a color you see outside, which is why it’s ideal for safety cones. The 3M Non-Reflective Safety Cone is sure to keep you safe, with affordable packages of four, 10 and 20 cones

Pros: I like that the cone is 18 inches high and 11 inches wide, as that is going to be pretty noticeable, especially on a soccer field. The cone is made of PVC, a really durable plastic material. Plus, each cone weighs about three pounds, so it won’t exactly blow away in the wind.

Cons: The 3M Non-Reflective Safety Cone doesn’t have any reflective strips, so it may not be the best option for traffic.

Best Collapsible

Eurow Safety Cone

Living in New York City, storage space is hard to come by. That’s why I’m so happy about the Eurow Safety Cone, which collapses down to less than two inches from 17 inches high and 10 inches wide.

Pros: The Eurow Safety Cone is the only cone I’ve reviewed with LED lights, which you can have on, off, or flashing for more visibility. Replaceable batteries power the LED light. The cone itself also has reflective collars for when the lights are off, so it’s visible no matter what.

Cons: Unfortunately, these additional features make the Eurow Safety Cone not the most affordable choice around.

Best For Traffic

Reliancer Safety Cones

One of the most popular uses of safety cones is through traffic. Of course, a cone used for traffic should have a reflective collar, which is why I chose the Reliancer Safety Cones for this category.

Pros: Available in either 18 or 28 inches high, these safety cones from Reliancer have reflective collars of four or six inches, respectively. They’re made out of a strong PVC, making them appropriate for any kind of weather. With these large sizes, you can rest assured that the Reliance Safety Cones will be visible in the dark, available in packages of six, 12 or 18 pieces

Cons: Unfortunately, these safety cones from Reliance are pretty expensive, but they are larger than other safety cones that I’ve reviewed.

Safety Cone Methodology

Safety Cone Methodology

Just how did I come to pick out the best safety cones of 2019? I look at a few key factors, including:

  • Colors: Safety cones are typically orange, although I’ve seen cones available in green, red, and yellow additionally.
  • Dimensions: Cones are measured by height and the diameter of the base. This is more of a personal preference, but the safety cones that I’ve reviewed have heights in between seven and 28 inches and diameters in between five and 14 inches.
  • Weight: You want a safety cone that’s heavy enough so it will stay in place, especially if you live in a windy area.
  • Reflective collars: If you’re using your safety cone for traffic or at night time, it should have a reflective collar at least a few inches wide.
  • Material: The majority of safety cones that I’ve reviewed are made of a durable plastic called PVC, which is the standard.
  • Pricing: Cones are often available in packages of two, four, 10, 20, and other options. The price per cone will depend on the size and it can be anywhere from just over a dollar to $17.50, differing greatly between companies. Typically, there is a discount if you buy more, so I recommend getting packages if you want multiple cones.

Safety Cone Tips

Here are some best practices for buying and using safety cones:

  • Blocking areas: Safety cones are useful not only of telling people of something dangerous, like a slipper floor, but also for blocking areas. This can be everything from a sinkhole in your driveway to a formal living room that you’d rather your toddlers avoid.
  • Keep in car: Safety cones are great if your car breaks down and you need to get out and look at something. Of course, always look both ways before you exit your car, but a safety cone is a great way to make sure that everyone sees that you’re broken down and can avoid coming near you.
  • Exercise: If your kid has a field day, you’re hosting a birthday party or you just want to set up a fun obstacle course for your child, safety cones are super helpful either as start and finish markers or as obstacles to jump over or through.
