August Doorbell Cam Pro Review

There’s nothing more annoying that sitting down to a nice dinner…and then you hear a knock on the front door. Is it worth walking away from your home-cooked meal?

While I can’t prevent sales people from knocking on your door, I can help you answer them easily from your phone. Video doorbells allow you to speak to and see visitors, often before they’ve even pushed your button. Today, I’m reviewing the August Doorbell Cam Pro. In the past, I’ve reviewed door locks from August so I’m ready to see how their video doorbells stack up. In this August Doorbell Cam Pro review, I’ll be looking at the devices’s design, features, installation process, and app before making a recommendation. Let’s get started!

With a gigantic temperature range, integrations with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Nest and IFTTT, plus a highly-rated app, there's a lot to like about the August Doorbell Cam Pro.

Pros and Cons of the August Doorbell Cam Pro

If you’ve read any of my other video doorbell reviews, then you know how much I love to go into detail, so I want to break down the best and worst things about the August Doorbell Cam Pro right away.

With a temperature range of -13 to 122 degrees Fahrenheit, the August Doorbell Cam Pro is definitely durable. It also has two-way audio as well as integrations with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Nest, and IFTTT.

On a less positive note, I don’t like that the August Doorbell Cam Pro has 960p HD video, lower than the current industry standard of 1080p HD. It also has color night vision, which I dislike compared to infrared, and it also lacks person detection, meaning you’ll probably receive some unnecessary notifications.

August Doorbell Cam Pro Design

The August Doorbell Cam Pro blends in so nicely with my house that I barely even notice it. A silver square with a circular camera in the middle, it’s quite sleek and modern and definitely not overpowering in anyway. In fact, you probably won’t even notice the doorbell at all, let alone its camera. Plus, you can choose from silver or dark gray to make sure it matches what you’ve got going on.

The August Doorbell Cam Pro works in temperatures from -13 to 122 degrees Fahrenheit, which might be the largest temperature range I’ve seen from a video doorbell. You’ll hardwire it into your home, but if you lose power, the August Doorbell Cam Pro comes equipped with a lithium ion backup battery. It’ll record as soon as it detects motion, connecting to the August Home app via Wi-Fi.

August Doorbell Cam Pro Features

So sure, the August Doorbell Cam Pro is wrapped up in a pretty package, but I want to make sure the camera is up to snuff, specifically Security Baron’s Necessary Features Test. The Necessary Features Test combines technical specifications with my personal experience with a camera to judge it based on its video, audio, night vision, storage, smart platform integrations, and artificial intelligence. Let’s hope that the August Doorbell Cam Pro has a camera as nice as its outside!

Video

I hate to start on a negative note, but I’m pretty disappointed that the August Doorbell Cam Pro only records in 960p. 1080p HD is the industry standard, so this is definitely not cutting it. I am happy, however, that the camera has an 120 degree field of view plus the ability to zoom digitally. The camera also comes with a But overall, you’re not going to get as clear video as you would from a camera with 1080p HD.

Audio

Of course, the August Doorbell Cam Pro has two-way audio, enabling you to speak to your guests remotely.

Night Vision

Another negative note. Rather than infrared night vision from LED sensors, the August Doorbell Cam Pro has color night vision from a bright white light. At first glance, color night vision might sound superior than black and white, but I prefer infrared. It’s a lot less conspicuous than having a bright light shining in your face, and I like to keep my home monitoring on the down low for the most part.

Storage

August recently changed its storage options, and I have to say that it’s taken a bit of a dip. Now, there is no local storage of any kind and no cloud storage for free. If you want cloud storage, it’ll be $2.99 a month for 15 days of storage or $4.99 for 30. Obviously, I’d rather have local and cloud storage on the house, but these prices are reasonable compared to competitors.

Smart Platform Integration

If you’re on this website, it’s probably because you’d like to build your smart home, and the August Doorbell Cam Pro would make a great addition. It integrates with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, allowing for voice commands using the two most popular voice assistants.

You’ll also be able to sync the August Doorbell Cam Pro with Nest and IFTTT-compatible products to create your customized, automated home. For example, I like having my smart light bulbs come on as soon as my August Doorbell Cam Pro detects motion. When it comes to smart platform integrations, the August Doorbell Cam Pro passes with flying colors.

Artificial Intelligence

Person Detection

The August Doorbell Cam Pro doesn’t have person detection or facial recognition, so you’ll receive movement from cars, pets, and other inanimate moving objects.

Installing the August Doorbell Cam Pro

To install the August Doorbell Cam Pro, you’ll need a mechanical chime doorbell with a 16-24V transformer. You’ll also need a standard Philips screwdriver. Of course, you’re free to install the August Doorbell Cam Pro yourself, but you can also buy professional installation, starting at $122.26 per unit on Amazon.

The August Home App

Finally, I want to talk about the August Home app. It’s where you’ll see and speak to visitors, create smart platform integrations and home automation, access cloud or local storage, and livestream footage. The app has nice ratings, a 3.5 from Android users and a 4.8 from iPhone users.

“This is an amazing product. Worked really well with Apple. Very convenient specifically when you come home with groceries,”

wrote Android-user Clement Fernando in a recent four-star review.

Recap of the August Doorbell Cam Pro

At $199, the August Doorbell Cam Pro is at an average price for video doorbells, and it certainly has some great features. I’d definitely recommend it as a video doorbell in general, but it’s not for everyone, so let me break it down for you.

I’d go with the August Doorbell Cam Pro if you’re looking for…

  • Durability: With a temperature range of -13 to 122 degrees Fahrenheit, the August Doorbell Cam Pro will work during all seasons
  • Two-way audio: Speak to visitors before you even open the door!
  • Awesome smart platform integrations: Whether you’re in the Amazon or Google ecosystems, the August Doorbell Cam Pro will fit right into your smart home
  • Highly-rated apps: Both iPhone and Android users liked the August Home app
  • Affordability: $199 is a really reasonable price for a video doorbell camera, believe it or not

But stay away if any of the following are dealbreakers…

  • Disappointing video: I wish the August Doorbell Cam Pro had 1080p HD display instead of 960p
  • Color night vision: I would’ve preferred infrared night vision over color night vision, personally
  • Local storage or free cloud storage: Unfortunately, the only way to record with the August Doorbell Cam Pro is to pay a minimum of $2.99 a month.
  • No person detection: Your notifications won’t all be necessary and could be a bit annoying.
