August View Video Doorbell Review

Everyone knows that you can’t be in two places at once; that’s simple physics. But with video doorbells, you can seem like you’re home whenever and wherever. They allow you to answer your visitors, see, and even speak to them through two-way audio.

In this review, I’m taking a look at the August View, the latest video doorbell from August. In the past, I’ve reviewed other August products like the August Video Doorbell Pro and the August Smart Lock Pro, so I’m ready to see how the August View stacks up. Let’s get started!

The August View is super-durable and can handle water jets from any direction plus temperatures from negative four to 122 degrees Fahrenheit. Did I mention its video quality is an amazing 1440p?

August View Pros and Cons

Let’s make sure that you’re okay with the basic pros and cons of the August View.

The August View is super durable with a huge temperature range. Its video is an astounding 1440p HD plus it has infrared night vision, two-way audio, and integrations with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. Wowza!

But unfortunately, the August View lacks person detection, local storage, and the option to hardwire it into your home.

August View Design

One of the best things about the August View’s design? You can customize it to match your house! Just change the metal faceplate from a bunch of colors, including Satin Nickel, Oil Rubbed Bronze, Satin Brass, Midnight Gray, matte black, white, red, or blue. I’ve never seen so many color options from a video doorbell before, so I’m taking this as a good omen.

Most of you are probably going to install your video doorbells outside, so it’s important that they can withstand all the seasons and still function normally. Fortunately, the August View has a temperature range of negative four to 122 degrees Fahrenheit, plus an IP rating of X5, meaning it can deal with water jets from any direction. Just don’t spray it with powerful water jets or immerse it in water, and the August View will keep on keeping on.

If you’re not handy, you’ll love that the August View is powered by a rechargeable battery (no hardwiring for you!). The battery only takes three hours to charge but lasts for three months— sounds like a fair trade to me. The camera itself will record whenever motion is detected or whenever the doorbell is pressed, alerting you via a push notification using Wi-Fi.

August View Features

This being a video doorbell, having a quality camera is of the upmost important. naturally I’m going to apply Security Baron’s Necessary Features Test to judge the camera’s video, audio, night vision, storage, smart platform integrations, and artificial intelligence capabilities. Let’s get started!

If you’ve read any of my camera reviews, then you probably already know that 1080p HD video display is the industry standard. Well, the August View goes above and beyond offering 1440p, with 33% more pixels than 1080p HD! When you factor in an 150 field of view plus six times digital zoom, it’s very clear that footage from the August View will be…well, very clear.

Audio

Of course, the August View has a speaker and microphone to allow for two-way audio, meaning you can speak to your guest whether you’re busy in the kitchen or on a business trip in Taipei.

Night Vision

As far as night vision goes, the August View is all infrared, which I definitely prefer over color night vision. Why? Because color night vision is made possible because of a bright white light that not only will blind your visitors, but will also make your doorbell camera exceedingly obvious. Infrared LED sensors, on the other hand, are much more stealthy.

Storage

August Doorbell Subscriptions

August recently updated their storage policies and I have to say I’m a little disappointed. There’s no local storage options and no free cloud storage. If you want to record anything, you’ll need to pay a minimum of $2.99 a month for 15 days or $4.99 a month for 30 days. While I wish they gave free cloud and local storage, I must say that these prices are really reasonable. Don’t believe me? Consider this: Nest makes you pay $30 a month for 30 days of cloud storage. It really goes to show you, the grass is always greener!

Smart Platform Integration

Whether you’re in the Google or Amazon ecosystems, you’ll be able to tell your voice assistant to control the August View. That’s because it works with both Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, giving you the flexibility you need to build your smart home.

Artificial Intelligence

Person Detection

Unfortunately, the August View lacks person detection or facial recognition. Instead, you’ll receive notifications every time the camera detects movement, which may be from people, animals, cars, or even the wind.

The August Home App

The August Home app is how you’ll control your August View remotely. From here, you can talk to visitors, access cloud storage, set up your smart platform integrations, and livestream footage. The app has great ratings, a 3.5 from the Google Play store and a 4.8 from the Apple store.

Recap of the August View

At $229.99 as of writing, the August View is a bit over-priced compared to similar models I’ve reviewed which had an average price of about $205, so not by much. Overall, I think it hits a lot of standards in video, audio, night vision, and more, so it’s definitely a solid choice of video doorbell.

I’d buy the August View if you’d like…

  • Durability
  • Rechargeable battery
  • Excellent video, audio, and night vision
  • Integrations with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant
  • Highly-rated app

But stay away if you wanted a video doorbell with…

  • Hardwired installation
  • Free cloud and local storage
  • Person detection
  • Most affordable price
