SimpliSafe Video Doorbell Pro Review

SimpliSafe is one of my all-time favorite security companies, so when I heard that they made their own video doorbell, I was super excited to try it out. Video doorbells let you answer your door, see and even speak to your visitor from anywhere. It’s useful for making it seem like you’re home when you’re not, an easy way to trick intruders. Besides that, it’s just plain convenient to answer your door from your phone. They don’t call it a smart home for nothing!

In this review, I’ll be discussing the SimpliSafe Video Doorbell Pro in terms of its design, features, mobile application, and overall value. Let’s see if it’s as great as the SimpliSafe security system in general.

Pros and Cons of the SimpliSafe Video Doorbell Pro

You know how much I love to ramble on about video doorbells, so let me tell you about the SimpliSafe Video Doorbell Pro’s best and worst qualities right off the bat.

I like that the SimpliSafe Video Doorbell Pro has 1080p HD video display, infrared night vision, and person detection.

Unfortunately, it only works in temperatures from 32 to 115 degrees Fahrenheit, which makes it a poor choice for colder climates. It must be hardwired into your home, which makes installation much more complicated, and you won’t be able to vocally command it using Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant, as it lacks smart platform integrations.

Aesthetically, the SimpliSafe Video Doorbell Pro is very mid-2000s Mac. It’s a pill-shaped white cylinder with a shiny silver doorbell button encased in a blue light, and of course, a black camera over it. The SimpliSafe Video Doorbell Pro will be hardwired into your home, which means you’ll never have to worry about it running out of battery, and it will connect to the SimpliSafe app via Wi-Fi.

You’ll probably be using the SimpliSafe Video Doorbell Pro outdoors, which is why it’s important that it can withstand harsh weather conditions. Here, things get a little disappointing. The SimpliSafe Video Doorbell Pro’s temperature range is 32 to 115 degrees Fahrenheit, which doesn’t seem large enough on the colder side. I know that many states in the continental U.S and otherwise get much colder than 32 degrees, so I would only recommend the SimpliSafe Video Doorbell Pro to those who live in warmer climates.

The SimpliSafe Video Doorbell Pro will record whenever the sensor detects activity. Of course, we’ll talk about how that footage is stored later.

SimpliSafe Video Doorbell Pro Features

Just because a camera is in a video doorbell does not mean I’m not going to apply Security Baron’s Necessary Features Test to it! Using technical specifications along with my own experience, I review cameras in terms of video, audio, night vision, storage, smart platform integration, and artificial intelligence capabilities. Let’s hope I like the SimpliSafe Video Doorbell Pro as much as I liked the SimpliCam, if not more!

Video-wise, I’m really pleased with the SimpliSafe Video Doorbell Pro. Not only does it have the industry standard of 1080p HD, but it also has HDR, which stands for High Dynamic Range. This is especially important for a camera that will most likely be outside, as it helps balance out natural lighting to make an image that’s closer to real life.

Aside from that, the SimpliSafe Video Doorbell Pro also has a wide field of view of 162 degrees, plus the ability to zoom in optically. So yea, I guess you could say I’m pleased with the SimpliSafe Video Doorbell Pro’s video quality.

Audio

Of course, the camera also comes with a speaker and microphone built-in so you can converse with your guests, or tell them to scram through two-way audio.

Night Vision

I prefer infrared night vision over color night vision from a bright white light because it doesn’t make it glaringly obvious (no pun intended) that you’re recording someone. Fortunately, the SimpliSafe Video Doorbell Pro has infrared night vision from LED sensors so I can see my visitors easily after sundown.

Storage

Now, storage is really going to depend on whether you have the SimpliSafe Interactive Plan, which you only would if you have the larger SimpliSafe system. If you do have the Interactive Plan, you’ll be able to download footage locally or receive 30 days of cloud storage free, among other features (to learn more, read our full review of SimpliSafe).

Without the Interactive Plan, you’ll have no local storage and 30 days of cloud storage will cost $4.99 a month. While I wish SimpliSafe offered all of its customers local storage and cloud storage on the house, this pricing is really reasonable for the time length. To buy 30 days of cloud storage with Nest, for example, would cost $30 a month, over six times as much as SimpliSafe! Trust me, the grass isn’t always greener.

Smart Platform Integration

If you’re looking to install a video doorbell, then chances are you probably have Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant as your voice assistant. Well, I’ve got some bad news for you. The SimpliSafe Video Doorbell Pro doesn’t have any smart platform integrations, so you won’t be able to command it vocally or sync it with other connected devices. This is a huge drawback, as I’m sure a lot you readers would like to create an automated smart home.

Artificial Intelligence

Person Detection

Remember when I said that the SimpliSafe Video Doorbell Pro will record whenever it detects motion? I have a small caveat, and it’s going to make your notifications a whole lot smarter. The SimpliSafe Video Doorbell Pro comes with person detection, meaning it can differentiate between people and other moving objects; cars, animals, trees blowing in the wind, you name it. This is going to make sure that you’re only getting notifications that matter. Because let’s be honest, even the biggest animal lover doesn’t need to be notified every time a squirrel runs past their SimpliSafe Video Doorbell Pro.

Installing the SimpliSafe Video Doorbell Pro

Installing the SimpliSafe Video Doorbell Pro requires an existing doorbell setup and a Philips head screwdriver— that’s it! Now, the first thing I did was charge the SimpliSafe battery. After that, it was time to actually hardwire the SimpliSafe Video Doorbell Pro into my home, which was where I encountered some issues. I couldn’t keep the SimpliSafe Video Doorbell Pro connected to power for 30 minutes, but after that, the setup on the SimpliSafe app was easy and took less than five minutes. Once I set up the doorbell, it was easy to integrate it with the rest of the SimpliSafe system, so the only issue I had lied in the actual hardwiring of the SimpliSafe Video Doorbell Pro.

The SimpliSafe Home Security app is where you’ll see and speak to your visitors, livestream footage, access cloud storage, and control your camera in general. It has amazing ratings, a 3.9 from the Google Play store and a 4.8 from the Apple store. All in all, it’s one of the best apps I’ve seen from a video doorbell.

“Great system with all the bases covered – from freeze and water alarms to glass breaking sensors, motion sensors…[to] doorbell cameras. Simple to install and set up with absolutely superb customer service and tech support whenever needed,”

wrote Android-user Thomas Hoskinson in a recent five-star review.

Recap of the SimpliSafe Video Doorbell Pro

At $169 as of writing, the SimpliSafe Video Doorbell Pro is actually on the lower-end for video doorbells in terms of pricing. Overall, I think it’s a really nice product, but not for everyone of course. For example, if you were looking to command your video doorbell using your voice assistant, the SimpliSafe Video Doorbell Pro isn’t a great choice.

I think the SimpliSafe Video Doorbell Pro would be good for you if you’d like…

  • Awesome video, two-way audio, and infrared night vision
  • Person detection
  • Highly-rated app
  • Affordable price

But avoid it if you were looking for…

  • Free cloud and local storage
  • Smart platform integrations
  • Temperature range that goes under 32 degrees Fahrenheit
