Smart Light Bulb Methodology

So those are my picks for the best smart light bulbs of 2019, but how do I go about picking them, and what should you be looking for? In this section, I’ll tell you all about the ins and outs of smart light bulbs and how to tell which ones are worth buying. Let’s take a closer look.

Smart Light Bulb Design

Multicolor Smart Light Bulb

When it comes to design, there are actually very few differences between smart bulbs. The majority of them have the BR30 or A19 shape, with lamp base sizes of E26. The majority of smart bulbs connect to their apps through Wi-Fi, although Bluetooth is also a possibility— your choice will come down to your personal preference. In the same vein, most smart bulbs are dimmable, LED, and multicolor. I suggest buying a multicolor bulb because it gives you the most options for your lighting, 16 million of them, to be exact. I would also make sure your bulb is LED, as it uses more less energy than incandescent light bulbs.

Smart Light Bulb Features

Smart Light Bulb Schedules

Now let’s talk features, which are probably the biggest factors to affect your buying decision. In all the smart bulbs I’ve reviewed, I’ve seen the following features:

  • Schedules: Most of the smart bulbs I’ve reviewed allow you to set schedules for your bulbs so you don’t have to turn them on and off manually at the same time everyday. Convenient, right?
  • Scenes: Another essential feature is scenes, groups of lights that you’ve already customized in terms of color and dimness. This could be useful for reading, dancing— whatever you’re doing in your home, you’ll be able to easily access the perfect lighting scene that you’ve already set up.
  • Energy monitoring: Energy monitoring is a less common feature in smart bulbs. While it’s certainly not a necessity, it can definitely be useful to see how much energy your bulb is using. This could help reduce your electricity bill, so it’s a nice touch.
  • Sunrise/ sunset mode: Another non-essential but really cool feature is sunrise/ sunset mode, which syncs your bulb to when days begin and end. If you’re trying to keep your Circadian rhythm in tact, this mode could be a huge help.

Smart Light Bulb Geofencing
  • Geofencing: Geofencing connects your smart light bulbs with your phone’s location, turning them on when you’re home and off when you’re away. Now, this feature isn’t essential either, but it’s incredibly convenient. I’m a fan!
  • Syncing with other connected devices: You should definitely look for a smart bulb that syncs with other connected devices. While it’s nice to have a smart bulb on its own, being able to create home automation is going to make your life even more simplified. For example, you can have your lights go off as soon as your smart thermostat goes down. Not only will this take some responsibility off your back, but it will also probably save you money on your utility bills. Make sure the bulb you pick syncs with the connected devices you have and want in the future.
  • Shared access: The majority of smart light bulbs will allow multiple users to control them, particularly useful if you don’t live alone.
  • Smart platform integrations: If you’re in the Amazon, Google, Apple, or Microsoft smart home ecosystems, make sure that your smart bulb integrates with your voice assistant. Fortunately, most smart bulbs are integrated with at least one of the assistants, so you shouldn’t have much of a problem finding one.
  • Extras: Occasionally, smart bulbs have extra features that make multicolored light shows, themes, or animations. While these features are certainly not necessary, they’re pretty fun, especially if you want to host parties.

Out of all the features, I think the smart home platform integrations, home automation, schedules and scenes are the most essential. Extra points for geofencing, sunrise/ sunset mode, energy monitoring, and shared access, among other features.

Installing Smart Light Bulbs

LIFX Smart Light Bulb
LIFX Smart Light Bulb

How many smart home experts does it take to screw in a light bulb? Setting up your smart light bulb shouldn’t take you more than five minutes. Just screw it in and sync it with its respective app. Now, some smart bulbs require a hub, so make sure you take that cost into consideration when selecting your bulb. But if you already have a hub like the Philips Hue bridge, that’s all the more reason to buy a Philips Hue smart bulb. Just make sure you don’t mix and match your smart lighting, as that could lead to some cost redundancies.

Smart Light Bulb Apps

Philips Hue App
Philips Hue App

Since your app is what makes your smart light bulb smart, it’s important that its user-friendly and free of bugs. I check out reviews from the Apple store and the Google Play store before making any recommendation, and if an app has a rating under three stars, I won’t recommend it to owners of that particular smartphone. And if you see a lot of people that the app had trouble connecting with the smart bulb, run in the other direction.

Smart Light Bulbs Value

Most smart bulbs are in the range of $15 to $30, from the least expensive I’ve reviewed for $14.94 (say hello to the Philips Hue A19) to the most expensive at $52.20 (I’m talking about the LIFX A19 with infrared night vision). Remember, you are probably going to buy more than one smart light bulb once you start, so definitely keep the cost in mind. Sometimes, there are bundles for reduced prices, which is a great way to get the most bang for your buck.
