GE-C Life Smart Bulb Review

C by GE is part of the General Electric Company, one of the largest international conglomerates in the world. If you’re in the United States, you’ve probably used GE’s products. GE Lighting focuses on LED, solar, and EV bulbs. I bought the GE-C Life Smart Bulb as part of the Google Smart Light Starter Kit, which also included a Google Home Mini. In this review, I’ll focus on the bulb itself, which is sold separately both on the Google and C by GE websites.

I’ll go over the GE-C Life Smart Bulb’s design, its features, its installation process, and finally the C by GE app. Let’s get started!

The GE-C Life Smart Bulb is an LED bulb that connects to your app through Bluetooth. As part of the Google Smart Light Starter Kit that I purchased, the bulb is in a warm white with 60 watts equivalent. The shape of the bulb is A19, while the lamp base is E26, both standard for most light bulbs. The light is dimmable, so you can adjust it throughout the day.

Features of the GE-C Life Smart Bulb

Now let’s talk about the bulb’s awesome features. It allows you to create schedules so the lights will turn on or off automatically at certain times of the day. If you know you’re always reading the newspaper every morning, you can make sure the breakfast room’s lights go on around seven, for example.

You’re also able to create scenes, or customized lighting setups, which you can save in your mobile app. That way, you won’t have to spend time tediously turning individual lights on or off- you’ll be able to control multiple at once. You can even manually program lights to change when the sun rises or sets!

Plus, you can share access to the bulbs with multiple users, so you won’t be the only one who can remotely control your bulbs. If you’re feeling extra lazy, simply command the bulbs with Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa- GE-C has separate bulbs for each.

Nothing is perfect, and the GE-C Life Smart Bulb is no exception. It doesn’t have energy monitoring, so you won’t be able to see on the app exactly how much energy it’s using. Similarly, there’s no geofencing feature which means that you can’t have the lights turn on or off based on your phone’s location. Finally, you won’t be able to sync your bulbs with any other connected devices like smart security cameras, thermostats, or locks. That’s a shame because the more home automations, the less for you to do.

Installing the GE-C Life Smart Bulb

To use the GE-C Life Smart Bulbs, you need a Google Home Mini in the same room. This is sold with a bulb in the Starter Kit, or separately. I find it a little annoying that the bulbs need not only a hub, but also a hub within the same room. Many smart bulbs don’t need a hub at all!

The C by GE App

As GE manufacturers this bulb, you’ll use the C by GE app, not the Nest app. From the C by GE app, you’ll be able to turn the lights on or off, adjust their dimness, create scenes, set schedules, control multiple light bulbs at once, and share access to different users.

I was flabbergasted by the app’s poor reviews- only a 2.5 from the Apple store and a 1.8 from the Google Play store! While people had great things to say about the bulbs themselves, many complained about buggy updates. It’s safe to say that the C by GE app could use some work.
