As any cinematographer knows, lighting is incredibly important- think about the difference between harsh fluorescents and a warm white light! TP-Link’s Kasa’s Smart Light Bulb, model LB130, truly goes above and beyond a typical light bulb. Not only is it multicolor and dimmable, but you can adjust the light bulb through the Kasa app anywhere, anytime. Plus, it has some great features like scheduling and scenes, but we’ll get to that a bit later.
In the review, I’m going to talk about the Kasa bulb’s design, its features, how well it works, how easy it was to install, and finally, the Kasa Smart app. Let’s get started!
Design of the Kasa Smart Light Bulb
The Kasa Smart Light Bulb LB130 is an LED bulb that connects to your phone using Wi-Fi. The particular model I purchased is multicolor, dimmable, and has a brightness of 60 watts. It’s in the standard A19 shape and fits on an E26-size lamp base. I love that the light bulb doesn’t require a hub or a paid monthly subscription, just a Wi-Fi router.
Features of the Kasa Smart Light Bulb
One of the best parts of the Kasa Smart Light Bulb is all its smart platform integrations. You can control your light bulb through Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Nest, Microsoft Cortana, and IFTTT. I love that Kasa gives you so much flexibility. No matter if you’re in the Amazon or Google ecosystems, you’ll be able to control your Kasa bulb with your voice. The future really is here.
With Kasa light bulbs, you can create “scenes” of lighting for any occasion- soft lighting for reading, party lighting for those crazy dance parties you love throwing, or simply bright light for daytime. You can even put your light bulbs on schedules so they’ll automatically display your scenes at certain times of day. On your Kasa app, you’ll be able to control multiple lightbulbs at once, and create your customized lighting scenes. If you want, you can use the bulb’s Circadian mode to have lights automatically come on and off at sunrise or sunset.
Kasa also gives you the flexibility to have multiple users access one account so that different people can control your Kasa light bulb. Plus, if you have other TP-Link devices, you can sync your bulb to trigger or be triggered by another device turning on or off. An example would be to have a security camera go on if a light bulb switches on.
Finally, you’ll be able to monitor the Kasa Smart Light Bulb’s energy usage through the mobile app. Just a heads up, this bulb has a rated life of 22.8 years and an estimated yearly energy cost of only $1.32. Along with a two-year warranty, you can trust that this bulb is in it for the long haul.
Installing the Kasa Smart Light Bulb
As the lightbulb doesn’t require a hub, setting it up is as easy as screwing in a light bulb.
The Kasa Smart App
You’ll control your Kasa light bulb remotely through the Kasa Smart app. This is where you’ll create your scenes and schedules and monitor your energy usage. Whether you’re in the next room or in Timbuktu, you’ll be able to turn on your lightbulbs through the app, which is pretty useful for when you’re away from home. Although the bulb doesn’t have an “Away Mode” which will turn the lights on and off in a pattern to make it seem like you’re home, you can adjust the bulbs manually through the app.
The Kasa Smart App has great customer reviews, a 4.8 rating from the Apple store and a 4.7 from the Google Play store.
“Great for turning my holiday lights on/off on a schedule so I don’t leave them burning all night or have to handle the plug every time. It adds a bit of Christmas magic when they just switch on and light up the room without me having to remember to do it,”
wrote Kasa customer Megan Stewart in a five star review.
$29.99 may seem like a lot for a single light bulb- but when you think of how much more you’re getting with the Kasa LB130, the price starts to make sense. Let’s recap. The best things about the Kasa Smart Light Bulb are:
- Multicolor, dimmable
- Can create schedules and scenes
- Can control multiple light bulbs at once
- Energy monitoring
- Circadian mode
- Can sync with other TP-Link devices
- Can have multiple users on one account
- Integrates with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Google Nest, Microsoft Cortana, IFTTT

I would recommend this bulb to anyone who already has other TP-Link smart home products, or anyone who wants a device that pairs with Amazon or Google ecosystems.
