Expert Verified By: Micah Jamal Streiff, B.S

Are you looking for a smart bulb that will last you day and night? In this review, I’m taking a look at the LIFX A19 with infrared night vision, a sister to the other LIFX A19 smart bulb I’ve reviewed in the past. I’ll be going over the bulb’s design, features, installation process, and its respective app before recommending it or not. Let’s dive in!

LIFX+ and Box

This LIFX, LED bulb connects to your LIFX app through Wi-Fi, allowing you to control it remotely. You can change it from 16 million different colors, plus, you can dim it to completely customize your lighting. The bulb is a 75 watt equivalent but only uses 11 watts, an advantage of LED over incandescent bulbs. Finally, the bulb has the standard shape of A19 and a lamp base size of E26.

But what really sets this LIFX bulb apart is its infrared night vision. It’ll allow you to see more in the dark, especially outside. You can even use it with your existing security camera to improve its night vision!

Okay, now you know everything there is to know about the LIFX’s design, so let’s see what this thing can actually do!

Of course, the main draw of the LIFX bulb is that you can control it remotely, but the fun doesn’t end there. You can also create schedules for your bulb, having it turn on and off at specific times.

Plus, you can create scenes, groups of bulbs customized to your lighting for different activities or moods— reading, party, breakfast, what have you. As you’ll be able to control multiple bulbs at once and create scenes, you won’t have to reinvent the wheel every time you want specific mood lighting that you’ve made before.

Now, another way to turn your bulbs on and off is through geofencing. Geofencing connects the LIFX bulb with your phone’s location, so it can turn on when you’re near and vice versa.

If you prefer, you can also use Day Dusk feature, having the bulb sync with the sunrise and sunset. Or, if you want friends and family to join in on the fun, just have them download the LIFX app and connect to your Wi-Fi— they’ll be able to control it just as you can.

Of course, the LIFX is part of your larger smart home, and it has the smart home integrations to boot. One, you can command it using your voice alone with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple HomeKit, or Microsoft Cortana. You can also integrate it with Nest cameras, Arlo cameras, and IFTTT for some awesome and convenient home automations.

Smart Platform Integrations on the LIFX Box

For example, I like to pair my LIFX up to my Nest Cam Indoor, having the bulbs turn on as soon as the camera is disarmed. With so many different connected devices to sync to, the LIFX will make a great addition to your smart home.

Installing the LIFX Bulb with IR

Installing the LIFX+ was incredibly straightforward. After I screwed it in and turned it on, I clicked the plus sign in the upper right-hand corner of the LIFX app and connected the light. Then, I went into my Wi-Fi settings, found the wireless connection for the LIFX+, and hit add to current network. From there, the app led me through the rest of the process: naming the bulb, grouping it with other smart bulbs to create scenes, and controlling it. Overall, the process took less than three minutes, making it one of the easiest smart bulbs that I’ve ever installed.

The LIFX App

Now let’s talk about the LIFX app, your mobile command center for your smart lighting. It’s where you’ll view and control your lights, creating scenes, schedules, smart platform integrations, home automations, and more. While the app has a decent rating of 3.3 from the Google Play store, it only has a 2.5 on the Apple store. Now, Apple doesn’t let you see most of their customer reviews, but I was disappointed to see that the majority of the LIFX reviews were at one-star. So if you’re an iPhone user, you may have some serious issues controlling your LIFX through the app.

Overall, I really like the LIFX. Not only does it have all of the features I want from a smart bulb, but it also has some neat extras like infrared light, tons of smart home integrations, an even geofencing. However, at $52.20 it’s definitely on the more expensive end of things, so it’s not for everyone.

I’d recommend the LIFX A19 with infrared light if you’d like…

  • Superior night vision: This is the only smart bulb I’ve reviewed with such excellent night vision, making it a great choice whether you’re indoors or out.
  • Integrations with Amazon, Google, Apple, Microsoft, Nest, Arlo and IFTTT: With so many partnerships, the LIFX gives you a lot of flexibility to set up your smart home exactly as you please.
  • Great features: From geofencing to the Day Dusk feature, from scenes to schedules, the LIFX A19 is not lacking when it comes to features.

But steer clear if you’re not into…

  • High price: At just over $50, the LIFX is not the most affordable smart bulb around, especially because they typically cost anywhere from $15 to $30.
  • Poor app rating on Apple store: If you’re an iPhone user, LIFX bulbs are not for you.

That’s it for me! Please leave a question or comment if you are still unsure and I’d be happy to help. For more options, make sure you check out my review of the best smart light bulbs of 2019.
