LIFX Smart Light Bulb Review

LIFX, pronounced Life-X, began in 2012 with a Kickstarter campaign to launch their first multicolored LED smart light. Today, they offer 12 products in over 80 countries, which is pretty impressed for what began with a crowdfunded campaign! Today, I’m checking out the LIFX A19 Wi-Fi Smart LED Light Bulb in terms of its design, features, installation, and app. By the end of the review, you’ll be an expert on the LIFX smart bulb, and I’ll help you decide if it’s the right one for you.

Design

LIFX Bulb and Box

The LIFX smart bulb gives off LED light, which uses less energy than incandescent bulbs. The bulb will connect to your app through Wi-Fi. It’s dimmable, multicolor, and has a brightness of 75 watts, although it’s technically only 11 watts.

The shape is the standard A19 or if you prefer, the BR30, and the lamp base is also the E26 industry standard.

Features

LIFX Bulb Scene

The most important feature of the LIFX smart bulb is that you can control it remotely through the LIFX app. You can also set schedules for when you want your bulb to turn on and off and create scenes, customized groups of light bulbs that you can save so you don’t have to redo them every time.

You’ll be able to control multiple light bulbs at once through your app, which makes things a little less tedious. You can also have your bulbs go on and off when the sun rises and sets! Unfortunately, LIFX doesn’t offer geofencing, which would link the bulbs to your phone’s location so they can turn on when you get home and vice versa.

LIFX Bulb Smart Platform Integrations

But you can have the LIFX smart bulb sync to other connected devices. Not only does the LIFX smart bulb integrate with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple HomeKit, and Microsoft Cortana for voice commands, but you can also create home automations with a variety of IoT devices. Have your lights pair with Nest thermostats, Nest Protect (a smoke and CO monitor), your Logitech Harmony remote, or all Samsung SmartThings products. It also works with IFTTT, meaning it can be paired with hundreds of devices. Imagine having your thermostat turn onto a comfortable 70 degrees whenever your lights are on! Basically, your LIFX smart bulb is easily integrated into your smart home at large, which is a very good sign.

Aside from the basics, the LIFX smart bulb has a couple other fun capabilities that would be perfect for a party, or whenever you feel like dancing. With the LIFX Z Move and Animation theme, you can make your lightbulbs project moving colors all over your room (this is best when you have multiple bulbs, of course). You’ll be able to pick the colors, change the speed at which they change, as well as their brightness. Psychedelic!

LIFX also offers nine pre-made scenes, which they call themes. The themes range from a sunset to an ocean to a lovely forest. Talk about setting the mood!

Installing the LIFX Smart Light Bulb

How many smart home experts does it take to screw in a light bulb? Just one, as it turns out. The first thing you’ll do to set up your LIFX smart bulb is to screw it in as you would any other light bulb (make sure the lamp is off before you start). Then you download the LIFX app, click “add device” and connect the bulb to Wi-Fi. From there, the app will walk you through the set-up process with step by step instructions. From start to finish, I had my LIFX smart bulb set up in just a few minutes.

The LIFX App

The LIFX App

The LIFX app is where you’ll view and monitor your lights remotely, so I’m hoping it’s user-friendly. While the app has a decent 3.3 rating on the Google Play store, unfortunately it only got a 2.5 from iPhone users. Apple isn’t the best about letting you see their reviews.

Recap

Overall, I’m really happy with the LIFX smart light bulb. At $39.88 as of writing, it’s smack dab in the middle in terms of pricing. In sum? I’d definitely recommend the LIFX bulb, but it’s not for everybody.

I’d get the LIFX smart light bulb if you want…

  • Android app with decent ratings
  • Affordable price
  • Tons of smart home integrations
  • Schedules, scenes, sunrise/ sunset mode, themes, and animations

But stay away if you were looking for…

  • Highly-rated iPhone app
  • Energy monitoring
  • Geofencing

That’s it from me! If you have any questions, please leave a comment below. I hope to hear from you soon.
