Philips Hue Decorative Candle Smart Bulb Review

Expert Verified By: Micah Jamal Streiff, B.S

If you’re looking for a smart bulb with style, then you’ve come to the right place. In this review I’m checking out the decorative candle smart light bulb from Philips Hue, probably the most recognized bulb brand in the country. I’ll be reviewing the bulb in terms of its design, features, installation process and app before making a recommendation to you. There’s no time like the present, so let’s get started.

Design

The design of the decorative candle bulb is a bit different from the other smart light bulbs that I’ve reviewed in the past. Rather than having the standard A19 or BR30 bulb shape, it’s in B11, which looks like a vertical tear drop. But don’t worry— it still has that E12 lamp base size, allowing you to fit it into most light fixtures. To use the decorative candle bulb in the first place, you’ll need the Hue bridge, so it’s a convenient choice if you’re already in that ecosystem. The bulb will connect to the bridge via Zigbee protocol, and from there, the bridge will communicate with your Philips Hue app via Wi-Fi.

This particular decorative candle bulb can be set to white or any color you want. It’s dimmable, and has a 40-watt equivalency but only uses 6.5 watts, thanks to its LED light type, way more efficient than incandescent light.

Features

Now, the main thing that makes a smart bulb “smart” in the first place is remote control. Obviously, you’ll be able to control the Philips Hue Decorative Candle Bulb through the Philips Hue app, but its features don’t end there. If you have Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, Microsoft Cortana or Google Assistant, you’ll also be able to control your bulb via voice commands.

But there’s even easier ways to control your bulb. If you sync it to your phone’s location, you can have the bulb use geofencing, turning on or off based on your local.

You can even use sunrise/ sunset mode to have the bulb sync with the beginning and end of the day! This completely takes you out of the picture and lets your lights run themselves.

Smart Light Bulb Schedules

Another way to control your bulbs is to put them on schedules. For example, I like to have my lights on periodically when I’m not home to throw off possible intruders. If I want to be able to turn on groups of lights at once, I can just access scenes, groups with customized colors and dimness levels. Plus, if I want to have someone else control my bulbs, I can add multiple users in the Philips Hue app. Because why should I be the only one enjoying my Philips Hue Decorative Candle Bulb?

Remember those smart platforms that I mentioned? Not only will you be able to use voice commands with your smart bulb, but you can also sync it with other connected devices, creating the automated home of your dream. The Philips Hue Decorative Candle Bulb works with products from IFTTT, Logitech, Nest, Samsung SmartThings, Xfinity Home, Vivint, Razer, Elk, and RunLessWite, which gives you hundreds of automation possibilities. All in all, this bulb has all the features I want, so I’m really happy so far.

Installing the Philips Hue Decorative Candle

Installing the Philips Hue Decorative Candle

Installing the Philips Hue Decorative Candle requires the Philips Hue bridge, a router that plugs into an outlet in your home. Once you have the bridge synced with the app, you just screw in the light bulb itself, go into the Philips Hue app, hit add light. Once the app finds the light, you can name it and then begin creating scenes, schedules, and more. The entire process took less than five minutes!

The Philips Hue App

The Philips Hue App

Now let’s talk about the Philips Hue app. It’s where you’ll control your lights, set up schedules, scenes, smart platform integrations, geofencing, sunrise/ sunset mode, and shared access. Now, in past reviews, I was disappointed with the Philips Hue app, but I’m glad to see that its ratings have shot up. Currently, it has a 3.4 from the Google Play store and a 4.4 from the Apple store, so I’m glad it works so well on Androids and iPhones. Way to update!

Recap

At its current price of $44.97, the Philips Hue Decorative Candle Bulb is a bit overpriced, but it has all the features and design elements I want, plus a highly-rated app. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a great smart bulb, as long as you’re willing to spend a little more. It’s especially great if you already have the Hue hub, but if you don’t, make sure to take that added cost into consideration.

That’s it for me! If the Philips Hue Decorative Candle Bulb doesn’t seem like the right choice for you, make sure to check out the best smart light bulbs of 2019.
