Philips Hue White and Color Smart Bulb

Can you paint with all the colors of the wind? I can, now that I’ve got a multicolored smart light bulb,  namely, the Philips Hue White and Color. In this review, I’m doing a deep dive into the bulb’s design, features, installation process and app, figuring out if it’s worth your hard-earned $33.45. I’ve reviewed a few different smart light bulbs from Philips Hue, like the decorative candle, the bar light, the A19, and the bloom lamp, so I’m interested to know how the white and color bulb will stack up. Let’s get started!

This smart bulb has it all, whether you're in the Amazon, Google, or Apple ecosystems— scenes, schedules, geofencing, and more.

The Philips Hue White and Color Bulb

At first glance, the Philips Hue White and Color Smart Bulb looks like the kind of bulb you can pick up at any hardware store in the country, but it is far from it. Connecting to the Hue bridge via Zigbee technology, the bridge then communicates with your Philips Hue app using Wi-Fi, allowing you to control the Philips Hue White and Color Smart Bulb remotely. It’s important to note that you’ll need the bridge in order to use this bulb, so take that into consideration.

Now, this smart bulb uses LED light with the equivalent of 60 watts, although it only uses 10. It has the classic A19 shape plus a lamp base shape of E26, allowing it to fit into the majority of lamps. Of course, the Philips Hue White and Color Smart Bulb comes in all colors and is dimmable, allowing you to truly customize your lighting situation.

Philips Hue White and Color Bulb Smart Platform Integrations

So aside from being able to control the Philips Hue White and Color Smart Bulb remotely, there are a bunch of other cool features you should know about. Let’s talk about turning your bulbs on and off. If you have Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, or Apple HomeKit, you can turn off your smart bulbs using your voice only.

You can also hook up the Philips Hue White and Color Smart Bulb to your phone’s GPS, having your lights turn on automatically when you get home and vice versa— it’s a process known as geofencing. Or for the sleep minded, you can sync up the smart bulb with the rise and fall of the sun in sunrise/ sunset mode.

That’ll certainly be a boost to your Circadian rhythm! For the organized, you can even set your bulb to custom schedules, useful if you have a routine that you repeat often (which most of us do).

Aside from its smart platform integrations, the Philips Hue White and Color Smart Bulb can also be synced with other connected devices from Hue, Nest, SmartThings, and Wink. You can have devices’ actions trigger actions in other devices, a process known as home automation. For example, I like my lights to turn on when my Nest Cam Indoor is disarmed, as it means I’ll be home. If you’re looking to build your smart home, the Philips Hue White and Color Smart Bulb will fit in snug as a bug in a rug.

Finally, I want to tell you about shared access and scenes. Shared access lets you add multiple users who can control your Philips Hue White and Color Smart Bulb, because why keep the fun to yourself? Lastly, scenes let you create customized groups of lights that you can access at anytime. I have different scenes for reading, cooking, partying— all of the activities I do. It’s super convenient to be able to access a scene without having to recreate it from scratch. And that’s it for the Philips Hue White and Color Smart Bulb’s features, a really comprehensive list.

Installing the Philips Hue White and Color Bulb

Using the Philips Hue smart bulb means that you’ll need the Philips Hue bridge installed on your router. Once that’s plugged in, you’ll turn the bridge on and head into the Philips Hue app. It should pick up on your bulb but if it doesn’t, you can type in the serial number. Next, the bridge and the bulb will sync. Just screw in your light bulb, give it a name in the Philips Hue app, and you’re good to go! The whole process only takes a few minutes.

The Philips Hue App

The Philips Hue App

You’ll control and customize your Philips Hue White and Color Smart Bulb through the Philips Hue app. I’m pleased to say that both iPhone and Android users rated the app positively. It received a 3.4 from the Google Play store and a 4.4 from the Apple store. Not too shabby!

This smart bulb has it all, whether you're in the Amazon, Google, or Apple ecosystems— scenes, schedules, geofencing, and more.

Recap

At $33.45, the Philips Hue White and Color Smart Bulb is slightly more expensive than most of its competitors, but only by a few dollars. Despite this, it’s definitely worth the price, with all of the features and design elements I like to see in a smart bulb.

I’d buy the Philips Hue White and Color Smart Bulb if you have Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, Nest, SmartThings, or a Hue bridge. It’s also great if you’re looking for scenes, schedules, geofencing, sunrise/ sunset mode, and shared access.

I wouldn’t buy the Philips Hue White and Color Smart Bulb if you are have Microsoft Cortana or are looking for a more affordable option. It’s also not for you if you want a bulb that doesn’t require a hub.

That’s it from me! To learn about other great options, be sure to check out the best smart light bulbs of 2019, or leave a question below— I’d love to hear from you!
