Kwikset SmartCode 888 Deadbolt Review

Do you want a lock that you can control from your phone, an app that doesn’t require a key but instead, a passcode? You’ve come to the right place! Today I’m reviewing the Kwikset SmartCode 888 Deadbolt. I’m super excited because Kwikset is one of the most trusted lock brands around. They’ve been in business since 1946, named for their speedy installation. In 2008, they launched the SmartCode deadbolt, their version of a smart lock, so I’m ready to see what’s in store. In this review, I’m going to go over the Kwikset SmartCode 888 Deadbolt’s design, features, and the app you’ll control it with. Let’s get started!

The Kwikset SmartCode 888 Deadbolt comes in three colors: Venetian Bronze, Satin Nickel, and Lifetime Polished Brass (basically, dark gray, light gray, and gold). I’m not exactly loving the look of the deadbolt; its buttons look a bit old-fashioned and don’t really go with the deadbolt itself, especially in the Venetian Bronze. But this isn’t a beauty contest. Looks aside, the Smartcode 888 operates through four AA batteries with a lifetime of one year. It works in temperatures from -40 to 150 degrees Fahrenheit, a huge range, plus it has a tamper alarm to protect against picking and bumping. Sounds good to me!

Keep in mind that the Kwikset SmartCode operates through Z-wave technology, so you’ll need a hub to use it. I used my SmartThings Hub, which means that I’ll control my lock with the SmartThings app, but we’ll get into that a little later.

Now let’s dive a little bit deeper into what the 888 can do.

Kwikset SmartCode 888 Deadbolt Features

Right off the bat, I want you to know that the Kwikset SmartCode 888 Deadbolt integrates with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, IFTTT, and SmartThings. You can also use it with a Ring Video Doorbell or any Google Nest product for some awesome home automations.

With the SmartThings app, you’ll be able to set up geofencing, meaning that your lock can unlock when it senses your phone’s presence. Let’s be honest: we never leave the house without phones these days, so why shouldn’t it unlock your door for you? I also love that you’ll be able to add up to 30 user codes to your SmartCode 888 Deadbolt, as this’ll make it easier to let people in the house when you’re gone. You’ll be able to track your lock’s history from the SmartThings app, and don’t worry— this thing locks automatically when you leave your house. So far, I’m super impressed with the Kwikset SmartCode 888 Deadbolt!

The SmartThings Classic App

SmartThings App with Lock Screen

I controlled my Kwikset SmartCode 888 Deadbolt with the SmartThings Classic app, not to be confused with the SmartThings Samsung app (confusing, I know, but the SmartThings Classic app has better ratings and still works for now).

Features of the SmartThings App

From the SmartThings Classic app, I can lock and unlock my door, control multiple locks at the same time, check the statuses and event history of my locks, and change their settings. I can also add guest access and set up geofencing.

Reviews of the SmartThings App

The SmartThings Classic app has good reviews, a 4.5 from the Apple store and a 3.9 from the Google Play store.

“Working great!! Fast and responsive! Love the start screen with the alarm and smart lock features!”

wrote Android user Anders Johnsson in a five-star review.

Recap of the Kwikset SmartCode 888 Deadbolt

At $118.99, the Kwikset SmartCode 888 Deadbolt is on the lower-end of pricing for smart locks, and it really hits everything I wanted out of a lock.

I’d recommend the Kwikset SmartCode 888 Deadbolt if you’d like…

  • Geofencing
  • Tamper alarm
  • Integrations with Ring Video Doorbell, Nest, SmartThings, IFTTT, Amazon Alexa, and Apple HomeKit
  • Add up to 30 users
  • Great app ratings
  • Affordable price

But I wouldn’t get it if the following are dealbreakers…

  • Needs Samsung Hub
  • Outdated design
  • No integration with Google Assistant
