Kwikset Smartcode 913 Deadbolt Review

If you’re still getting locked out of your house in 2019, then you’re doing it wrong. Why not invest in a smart lock? Today I’m reviewing the Kwikset Smartcode 913 Deadbolt, a smart lock from one of the most trusted lock brands in the country. I’ll be going over the deadbolt’s design, features, and of course, the SmartThings app that you’ll control it with. There’s no time like the present, so let’s get started!

Kwikset Smartcode 913 Deadbolt Design

Aesthetically, the Kwikset Smartcode 913 Deadbolt is looking a bit clunky to me. Maybe it’s the way the buttons protrude from the face of the lock, but I am just not loving this design. For a smart lock, it feels pretty outdated. Regardless, the deadbolt is available in Venetian Bronze, Polished Brass, or Satin Nickel, so you have some nice flexibility there.

The good news? The Kwikset Smartcode 913 Deadbolt is operated by four AA batteries with a lifetime of about a year. It comes with BumpGuard protection, which protects against lock bumping, and it’ll connect to your SmartThings app through Z-wave. This means that you’ll need a SmartThings Hub to use your Kwikset Smartcode 913 Deadbolt, so that’s something to keep in mind when you’re going over the price.

Kwikset Smartcode 913 Deadbolt Features

If you want to vocally command your Kwikset Smartcode 913 Deadbolt, you can do so through Amazon Alexa or Apple HomeKit. If you’re a device-head like me, you can hook up the Ring Video Doorbell, any Google Nest product, or any IFTTT or SmartThings product to your Kwikset Smartcode 913 Deadbolt, allowing for some convenient home automations. Imagine getting a video clip every time someone unlocks your door!

Aside from smart home integrations, the Kwikset Smartcode 913 Deadbolt allows you to add 16 unique user codes so other people can join in on the fun. You’ll be able to see exactly what’s been happening with your lock in the SmartThings app, plus, you can set up geofencing. What’s geofencing? It means that you’ll hook up your phone’s location to your Kwikset Smartcode 913 Deadbolt so it can unlock whenever you’re near. Keep in mind that the deadbolt will lock automatically whenever you leave your house, so whether you’re coming and going, your lock is doing most of the work for you.

The SmartThings Classic App

SmartThings App with Lock Screen

You’ll control your Kwikset Smartcode 913 Deadbolt through the SmartThings Classic app, which I prefer over the newer SmartThings app.

Features

From the SmartThings Classic app, you’ll be able to lock your door, control multiple locks simultaneously, check your locks’ statuses and histories, change settings, add guests, or set up geofencing.

Reviews

The SmartThings Classic app has awesome ratings, a 4.5 from iPhone users and a 3.9 from Android users.

“This is my first attempt at setting up a smart home system…I set it up for my elderly paraplegic grandmother who lives alone. All in all, I think that SmartThings is pretty good considering I was able to set it up, figure it out then teach both an 84 year old woman and my 65 year old dad how to use it all in just a few hours!”

wrote an iPhone user in a four-star review.

Recap of the Kwikset Smartcode 913 Deadbolt

Currently at $113.99 on Amazon, the Kwikset Smartcode 913 Deadbolt has basically everything you’d want in a smart lock, for a reasonable price.

I’d recommend the Kwikset Smartcode 913 Deadbolt if you’d like…

  • Integrations with Ring Video Doorbell, Nest, SmartThings, IFTTT, Amazon Alexa, and Apple HomeKit
  • Geofencing
  • Create up to 16 user codes
  • Great app ratings
  • Affordable price

But avoid it for the following reasons…

  • Needs SmartThings Hub
  • No integration with Google Assistant
