iDevices Switch Wi-Fi Smart Plug Review

Although iDevices was founded only in 2010, they’ve become a leader in the smart home industry. Their Wi-Fi and Bluetooth-connected products include lighting, thermostats, plugs, and switches with multiple smart platform integrations. I bought the iDevices Switch Wi-Fi Smart Plug, and I’m ready to see what it’s all about.

In this review, I’ll talk about the smart plug’s design, features, and mobile app. Let’s get started!

Design of the iDevices Switch Wi-Fi Smart Plug

iDevices Switch

The iDevices Switch Wi-Fi Smart Plug is a bit bulkier than most of the indoor smart plugs I’ve seen. Instead of just a plug, it has a white rectangular prism with a backlit purple line (which they call a night light) across the front. I find this design a bit clunky and unnecessary, but I’m glad that the plug doesn’t block any other sockets.

The iDevices Switch uses Bluetooth or Wi-Fi to connect to your phone, and you can use it on appliances up to 1800 watts, the industry standard for smart plugs. So far, so good!

Features of the iDevices Switch Wi-Fi Smart Plug

With your iDevices plug, you’ll be able to turn on appliances remotely. Through the app, you can also schedule appliances to turn on or off at specific times, and group appliances into “scenes”, combinations of appliances turned on or off. For example, I could schedule a scene of my space heater, my electric blanket, and my TV to turn on the instant I come home from work- can you say relaxation?

iDevices Switch Integration with Google Home

The plug also integrates with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple HomeKit, so you’ll be able to vocally command your plugs. Forgot to turn the light off in the bathroom? Just yell at it to turn off without leaving your comfy bed.

You’ll also be able to monitor appliances’ energy usage through the iDevices app, which I’ll discuss below. Energy monitoring can be useful if you’re trying to use less energy and thus, save some money.

The only things that iDevices Switch Smart Plug lacks are home mode and away mode. Home mode would mean that specific scenes would automatically trigger when you’re home, and away mode would mean that appliances would turn off and on to make it seem like you’re home. Although these modes don’t exist with the iDevices Switch, you can use scenes to mimic them- you’ll just have to set them up manually in your app. Which brings me to my next point…

Installing the iDevices Switch

Gabe and iDevices Switch

Setting up your iDevices Switch is really simple. First, you download the iDevices Connect app and connect to your home’s Wi-Fi. Then, plug in the switch and use the code provided to link the switch with your app. From there, you’ll download the firmware update and voíla— your iDevices Switch is installed! The entire process was painless and only took a few minutes, so I’m satisfied.

The iDevices Connected App

The iDevices Connected App

You’ll access your smart plugs through the iDevices Connected app. Here, you’ll be able to control all of your plugs, adjust the night light color and brightness on the plug itself, and create schedules and scenes. You’ll also be able to monitor your appliances’ energy usage.

The app fares nearly the same on both the Apple and Google play stores, with ratings of 3.8 and 3.7, respectively. It looked like many people were having trouble connecting their plug to the app, which is a huge issue. I was glad to see, however, that a representative from iDevices responded to every review offering support.
