Editors Pick

Samsung SmartThings ADT Smoke Alarm

If you already have a system from ADT, then the Samsung SmartThings ADT Smoke Alarm is the obvious choice. It’s offered at a low price compared to other smart smoke detectors, plus it has an 85-decibel siren to make sure you get the message if it goes off.

Pros: I love that the Samsung SmartThings ADT Smoke Alarm is battery-operated, as it’ll make installation a breeze. Plus, you can buy 24/7 professional monitoring for a low monthly price, plus a little extra if you also want home security monitoring. Finally, Android-users will love the SmartThings app, as it has a nice rating of 3.9 stars

Cons: The Samsung SmartThings ADT Smoke Alarm doesn’t detect CO, so you’ll need a separate device. Also, the SmartThings app on iOS is a bit lower-rated than I’d like at 2.9 stars, so it might not be the best choice for iPhone-users.

Nest Protect

Nest Protect

If you already are part of the Nest security system, then the Nest Protect smoke and CO detector can add some much needed environmental monitoring. With voice alerts, color-coded light alerts, as well as mobile notifications, Nest Protect makes it easy to keep your home safe, wherever you are.

Pros: The Nest Protect is designed to work with other connected devices from brands like LIFX, Philips Hue, SkyBell, Logitech, Harmony, Wink, Nexia, abode, and more, allowing for convenient home automation. Nest Protect tests its batteries and sensors over 400 times a day so you know it’s always working. Plus, this detector is tuned to pick up on both slow and fast-burning fires, the latter of which is more common with house fires.

Cons: If you’re an iPhone user, you may not love the Nest app, as it only has a 2.1 rating on the Apple store. Also, the Nest Protect is very expensive compared to smoke and CO alarms from other companies, typical of Google Nest in general.

First Alert Smoke and CO Detector

The battery-operated smoke and CO detector from First Alert was our pick for best value in terms of pricing and features. You’ll get alerts whenever there are dangerous levels of smoke and CO through the Onelink Home by First Alert app, available for both iPhone and Android users.

Pros: This detector works with Amazon Alexa, allowing for hands-free voice commands. I also like that you can silence the alarm with a single touch of a button, if need be. Plus, this detector gives low-battery alerts that can signal for up to eight hours, so you won’t have to worry about the batteries dying on your watch.

Cons: Unfortunately, the Onelink Home by First Alert app has pretty poor ratings on both the Google Play and Apple stores. I also don’t like that the app has a monthly fee to use, as most smart home apps are free.

Kidde 21026043

Whether there’s dangerous levels of smoke or CO in your home, you’ll be notified through Kidde’s mobile application, voice alerts and color-coded light alerts. The Kidde 21026043 is a solid choice for anyone that wants a smoke and CO alarm that’s powered by battery, as you won’t have to hardwire it into your home.

Pros: The Kidde 21026043 has an 85-decibel siren, about as loud as snow blower, to ensure that you hear it going off. It’ll alert you whenever there’s too much smoke, CO, or even when the batteries are low. And don’t worry, if your alarm is going off unnecessarily, you can silence it with the touch of a button using Kidde’s Hush Feature

Cons: Unfortunately, the Kidde RemoteLync app on the Google Play store only has a 2.4 star rating, so this may not be the best choice for Android users. There’s also no detection for fast-burning fires, which are more common for house fires.

Best For Existing Smoke And CO Alarms

Ring Alarm Listener

If you already have existing smoke and CO alarms that don’t connect to Wi-Fi, then the Ring Alarm Listener is the device for you. It’ll listen for your smoke and CO alarm and notify you if it goes off so you can stay on top of your home’s environment, no matter where you are.

Pros: If you want more coverage, you can sign up for 24/7 professional monitoring for only $10 a month or $100 a year, one of the most affordable services around. The Listener is battery-operated, which definitely helps simplify installation. Plus, it works with Amazon Alexa, making it perfect for those already in the Amazon ecosystem.

Cons: Unfortunately, the Ring Alarm Listener is definitely over-priced, especially considering this is only a listener. Also, you can only use it if you have existing smoke and CO alarms no more than 10 years old, which may not be the case for some people.

Smoke and CO Detector Methodology

So, just how did we pick the best smoke and CO alarms of 2019? Of course, we test out all of our products to make sure they’re easy to install and use, but first, we do a ton of research. Here is a general overview of what we were looking for:

  • Easy installation: Whether the detector if battery-operated or hard wired into your home, we want to make sure that DIY installation is doable for even the least handy person around.
  • Detection for smoke and CO: This one may seem obvious, but there are also options available that only detect one or the other. If it’s a smoke detector, we prefer options that can detect both slow and fast-burning fires, the latter of which is much more common for house fires.
  • Self-testing: None of us have the time to make sure our detectors are working properly, so we look for products that test themselves, making sure connectivity and power is up to snuff.
  • Notifications: Aside from mobile notifications, we prefer smoke and CO detectors with voice alerts, color-coded light alerts, and even sirens to make sure you’re aware of any problems.
  • App: Since these are all smart devices, a highly-rated app is a necessity, so we make sure to test it out as well as look at customer reviews from the Apple and Google Play stores.

Smoke and CO Detector Tips

What are some things to look out for when it comes to smart smoke and CO detectors?

  • Make sure the detector has a siren that’s loud enough for you to hear in your bedroom
  • If you have the option, sign up for 24/7 professional monitoring and cellular backup to ensure your detector stays on, even during a power outage.
