Comparison Overview
Frontpoint and ADT have excellent home security products and monitoring service. Each uses state-of-the-art technology from two of the major security product manufacturers in the world: GE and Honeywell.

The choice of sensors and detectors available is also similar. There are some differences in the components provided with their packages. Both also have Z-Wave management available.

The differences lie in each companies’ approach and marketing. Frontpoint works directly with customers using a Do-It-Yourself model. All components are connected to each consumer’s console and shipped directly to the customer. If you purchase additional sensors, the company will ensure they are networked and configured for your personal system. Frontpoint provides through videos and service lines.

ADT uses independent dealers to install and service their systems. Consumers sign up for the service, and ADT dealers do all the installation according to the users’ requirements. If you purchase additional equipment, ADT will configure it and install it. If there are problems that the company cannot fix over the phone, then ADT will send a technician to take care of the issue.

Frontpoint has one monitoring center, Rapid Response.

ADT owns and runs six monitoring centers throughout the country. Each complies with all industry standards and receives high marks from all sources, consumers, and industry, for the way the centers provide the service.

The marketing of each company differs in that ADT uses a very aggressive sales force and ad campaign to convince consumers to buy their product. ADT also has partnered with various companies, such as USAA, to offer discounts if you buy through their partner. Frontpoint spends fewer dollars on advertising and uses online and some media to promote themselves.

Winner and Loser Categories

Company Reputation

Winner: Frontpoint

ADT continues to suffer from a large number of complaints. The majority concern pushy salespersons, lack of transparency, and strict contract enforcement policies. They have an usually high number of BBB complaints. Several states have sued ADT for using deceptive sales tactics.

Frontpoint has a much fewer complaints registered against it. Those complaints that have been registered on the BBB and elsewhere are quickly resolved. The option of a one-year contract likely contributes to fewer complaints.

Winner: Frontpoint

The cost of activation for Frontpoint systems mirrors the total activation and installation fee for ADT. The individual component prices for ADT and Frontpoint are about the same, as are the monthly monitoring fees.

Frontpoint slightly edged out ADT due to discounts and coupons available to reduce the activation fee.

Winner: ADT

ADT provides service free of charge if there is a problem with your system.

While Frontpoint’s overall service receives high marks from consumers, if the problem cannot be resolved, you will have to find and pay a local company or handyman to fix the issue.

Winner: Frontpoint

Frontpoint wins due to their one-year contract option in addition to a three-year.

Packages and Contents

Winner: Frontpoint

ADT advertises that the equipment provided with their Pulse package is worth $850 (though they lease it to you free for the duration of your contract).

Frontpoint charges $449 for their Ultimate Plan, which includes more sensors than the Pulse package. Frontpoint includes one camera in the Ultimate Plan, but you must purchase a camera separately for the ADT Pulse package.

Ease of Installation

Winner: Frontpoint

Frontpoint is entirely DIY. All components are factory-set to work with your home system.

ADT requires professional installation for the basic system and for any additional sensors or detectors you might add at a later time.

Equipment Quality and Technology

Winner: Tie

There is no consumer or industry consensus as to whether GE or Honeywell has better equipment. The pricing is approximately the same and the quality equal.

Winner: Frontpoint

Frontpoint has a 30 day, full return policy. ADT advertises a six-month return policy, but only on installation. Canceling your contract within six months will incur fees of over $1000.

Comparison Summary

If you want home security and do not care whether or not it is professionally installed or DIY, Frontpoint wins or ties in all categories.  Learn more in our Frontpoint security review.

If you are not a Do-It-Yourself type of person, or you do not want to expend any funds upfront for equipment, then ADT provides good value for your money.  Learn more in our ADT review.
