Winner and Loser Categories

Packages, Equipment and Pricing

Winner: Vivint

Vivint has notably high prices compared to many other competitors, but does offer comprehensive, customizable packages with excellent technology options. Vivint offers top-of-the-line, modern equipment, with cameras included in its two more advanced package options.

LiveWatch uses mostly highly rated GE equipment, and has two equipment package offerings. They are barebones, however, and add-ons can get costly. Users can purchase packages at $99 and $149 when paired with applicable monitoring packages. Monitoring packages range from $20-$50 per month. Video capabilities are only available with the most expensive package. Two-way live voice assist is additionally available with LiveWatch’s Total Home and Total Home + Video packages.

Winner: Vivint

Vivint offers more options when it comes to monitoring contracts. Low commitment-seekers can buy equipment upfront and proceed with a month-to-month contract. Those looking for a longterm option can choose a 42 or 60 month contract. LiveWatch offers a one-year contract with no cancellation penalties.

Mobile App

Winner: Vivint

Vivint has a well-reviewed mobile app included in its packages. LiveWatch has some mobile management available with certain package options.

Winner: Tie

LiveWatch and Vivint each only offer one type of installation. Preference will depend on what type of service you’re seeking.

Livewatch offers DIY installation. Vivint requires professional installation, though as of February of this year, does not charge extra for it. (Outdoor cameras still come with a $99 installation fee and doorbell cameras come with a $29 installation fee). Activation fees will likely also apply.

Home Automation

Winner: Tie

LiveWatch and Vivint both have available home automation options.

Customer Service

Winner: Livewatch

Vivint scores notably low in customer service. The company has had issues with aggressive sales tactics, with multiple lawsuits filed on behalf of consumers against the company. Common complaints are misrepresentation and deceptive sales tactics.

Users also report unanswered customer calls, a lack of support after contracts are signed, and issues with billing.

Who Vivint is Better For:

  • Users seeking professional installation
  • Users looking for multitude of monitoring contract options
  • Users prioritizing mobile management
