The Best Home Security Systems for Pet-Owners

Note: SimpliSafe now offers self-monitoring.

When it comes to protecting your pets, you want to make sure that your security system knows what’s up. A common problem many people have is their motion detectors picking up on their pets, bombarding them with notifications. Another issue is environmental monitoring. What happens if there’s a fire or dangerous levels of C.O when you’re not home to handle it? In this review, I picked out the best home security systems for pet-owners that touch on these issues and more. I’m judging the systems not only on their components, installation processes, subscriptions, customer support, and app, but also on how pet-safety they are, because let’s be honest: your pets are your babies, and they need protection. Let’s take a closer look.

No one wants to be notified every time their pet moves, which is why Cove's motion sensor won't detect pets under 45 pounds, giving you only the notifications that matter.

Cove Motion Sensor

Cove Smart

If your furry friend is under 45 pounds, you’re in luck; Cove’s motion sensor won’t detect it! Cove also allows you to arm some but not all of your sensors, which you can customize to the areas that your pet hangs out in. It’s also helpful for not setting off any alarms at night!

I bought the Cove package, which includes a touch panel, door sensor, motion sensor, and key remote. All installation was super-simple DIY and 24/7 professional monitoring is included for as little as $15 to $35 a month. But the most unique feature of Cove is its payment options. You can either pay nothing for the first $500 of your equipment and pay either $25 or $35 a month for monitoring, or pay for the equipment upfront and pay either $15 or $25 for monitoring a month. Of course, all plans are monthly, allowing you to avoid those pesky long-term contracts, and cellular backup is included with both plans, ensuring your system stays on in the event of a power outage. Let’s be honest: you have better things to spend money on than your security system, i.e your beloved animal, which is why I’m so jazzed about Cove’s payment options.

SimpliSafe

SimpliSafe Summerfort System

SimpliSafe

Even though you want to monitor your pet throughout the day, you don’t need to be notified every time your cat scampers across your living room. For this issue, SimpliSafe has an easy solution. First, make sure your motion detection is at least four to five feet above the ground and out of your pet’s reach (especially if he’s a climber!). Then turn the motion detector upside down and mount it. It’ll only detect motion straight out from the motion detector and above, cleverly missing your pets. Smart, right?

SimpliSafe is one of my favorite security systems in general. Their installation couldn’t be easier, with peel-and-stick components manageable by even the least handy person around. All of their systems come with 24/7 professional monitoring and cellular backup which ensures that your system will stay on in the event of a power outage. These features are especially important for pet-owners because let’s be honest: you have a lot more responsibilities than just monitoring your pet’s safety! If there is an intrusion, one of your alarms will sound and you’ll be notified along with the professional monitoring team. After verifying an emergency, they can contact local authorities, all without you having to lift a finger.

Ring Alarm

Ring Alarm Security System

Ring Alarm

If you leave your pet alone at home, you might be especially scared of break-ins. Sure, you can buy a new TV and jewelry, but your furry friend is irreplaceable. Well, Ring Alarm has just the solution for you. A few years ago, they partnered up with the Los Angeles Police Department to install the Ring Video Doorbell in 10% of homes in a California town. Six months later, that sliver of homes saw a 55% decrease in break-ins. Plus, the footage from the doorbell camera helped police to identify perps. Impressed yet?

The Ring Video Doorbell isn’t all that Ring Alarm offers. The security kit I purchased includes a base station, keypad, contact sensor, motion detector, and a range extender. They also have regular old security cameras in the form of the Ring Stick Up Cam, available in both wired and wireless forms. If your pet is under 50 pounds, the motion detector can be set to ignore its heat, using passive infrared sensors to tell the difference between people and pets. Unfortunately if your pet is over 50 pounds, then Ring Alarm may not be the best choice.

Another huge advantage of Ring? Not only do they give you the option to self-monitor, but 24/7 professional monitoring is only $10 a month, one of the cheapest prices around. But even if you don’t choose to pay for monitoring, you’ll still get motion alerts, custom motion detection, livestreaming, and two-way audio completely free. The entire system is integrated with Amazon Alexa, not surprising as Amazon owns Ring, so you’ll be able to command it using your voice alone. And when you’re snuggling with your dog at the end of the day, what’s easier then telling your security system to disarm?

Vivint

The Vivint Smart Home App

Vivint

Having a dog-walker is great, but what’s not so great is leaving a key for them under the mat. I don’t need to tell you how unsafe this is, but what I want to tell you about is an alternative. With Vivint, you can add temporary passcodes to allow anyone into your home without you having to be there. Plus, you’ll know exactly when they came and went through the Vivint Smart Home app. Did I mention it’s one of the highest rated home security apps in the app stores?

Vivint also offers connected devices like smart thermostats and lighting that allow you to adjust your pet’s environment from a far. Of course, they have indoor and outdoor cameras so you can watch your pet, and their motion sensors are pet-friendly, adjustable to your pet’s weight. So long as they’re placed out of your pet’s reach by six feet, you can kiss those unnecessary notifications goodbye. Finally, Vivint sells smoke and C.O alarms so you’ll know whenever there’s a problem, wherever you happen to be.

Like Ring Alarm, Vivint gives you the option to self-monitor along with a professional monitoring option. But unlike all of the systems I’ve mentioned so far, Vivint includes professional installation, so that’s something to keep in mind.

ADT

ADT Indoor Camera

ADT

Do you have a pet of the larger variety? ADT may be your best bet. Their motion sensors are immune to pets up to 80 pounds, plus, they’re super-smart, differentiating between people and animals by their body temperatures, heat emissions, mass, speed, and more. Not to be corny, but they really put the smart in smart home!

In general, ADT is one of the most trusted security companies in the country. They’ve been in business for over 140 years, longer than you or anyone you know has been alive, plus they include 24/7 professional monitoring and cellular backup with all of their systems. Not surprisingly, they offer fire and smoke detectors as well as smart thermostats so you’ll always be in control and in the know about your pet’s environment. Just check the ADT Pulse app to livestream your pet and make sure he’s happy and safe!

Frontpoint

Frontpoint Motion Sensor

Frontpoint

Finally I want to tell you about Frontpoint. Similar to ADT, their motion detectors work on pets up to 80 pounds heavy, which is awesome. But you should know that if you have multiple pets, the sensors will not work and you’ll still get some unneeded notifications.

In general, Frontpoint is one of the top security systems available. They’re known for their amazing customer support, easy DIY installation, and highly-rated app. They offer connected devices to control your pets environment, including smart lights, locks, and thermostats, plus smoke and heat detectors. On top of that, all Frontpoint systems include 24/7 professional monitoring and cellular backup, so you know your pet will never be overlooked.
